I have seen this maybe a thousand times: "Finish crack by neck joint, doesn't go into wood."

I don't know. I feel like you can generally tell if it's the finish only or if it penetrates deeper.

I wouldn't let that bother me, if the price is right and everything else seems copacetic.

But I'm not the type to put on cotton gloves and grab the jewelers microscope whenever I get a new guitar, so........

As long as it looked stable, and the price reflected the condition, I'd at least consider such a guitar.

certain guitars seem to have these issues; every '58 style Flying V I have owned seem to have these finish cracks by the neck joint. My '58 style Korina V has it & it stays in perfect tuning. Doesn't seem to be a real problem. It's a purely cosmetic issue for many guitars but not for all guitars.

    "Heavy relic'ed - used - mint condition."

I actually saw one like that a few days ago. I mean, maybe it's true... but hard to prove.

Eh. I have a few guitars with that issue and I can't say 100% that the crack doesn't go into the wood. But it looks like a cosmetic issue to me. It's been that way for years on my main guitar and the guitar plays great.

That wouldn't keep me from buying a used guitar.

I got a Joe bonamassa Firebird pretty cheap because it has a couple of lines in the finish by the headstock

I’m pretty sure it’s just the finish and I haven’t had any issues with it

Well, a finish crack is a finish crack. Some old guitars are covered with them. Finishes are brittle, guitars are bendy. If I see a vintage guitar with out a finish crack that's more of a red flag to me than having one.

How about "Serious offers only!" When i make an offer it's always serious. Does this person normally only sell to comedians?

Anytime a seller spends extra verbage to tell some grand story about the guitar they are selling and how great it is, I pass immediately.

    "Finish crack by neck joint."

This is quite common--especially on older Gibson semi-hollows. There's a pretty simple way to tell if the issue is really cosmetic (finish crack) or structural (a glue joint separating). Here's what to do.

Look closely at the finish crack and take note of the visible gap.

Next, detune all the strings. IMPORTANT: ask the owner first if you can do this because some players think slacking all the strings at once is somehow damaging to a guitar. It's not.

Make all strings slack so they're laying on the frets. Flip the guitar over and look closely at the finish crack. If it closed up, there's probably something structural going on. If it looks the same as it did with the strings tuned up to pitch, it's just a finish thing.

I've seen lots of these cracks across the backs of neck joints, and perhaps one out of 15 or 20 is structural in nature. The rest are cosmetic only.

When I showed it to my insurance guy so he could add it to my household policy, he wanted to write it off immediately!

    I mean, it’s relic’ed! :D

Having sold on Reverb many times, I can tell you that comedians abound. When you use filters to reject low ball offers, they send messages. The most recent example was for a guitar that I have listed for $500. The offer: $60.
