I put my musical gear on Craigslist, as I don’t feel comfortable shipping items, and locally is just a lot easier in terms of “done and done”. I’ve had a couple texts recently, in a scam attempt I hadn’t seen before the last couple months. I understand how it works, and to the lesser technical savvy, I could definitely see this being an easy hack. Basically someone will text you acting interested, and then they’ll attempt to log in to your google email, they go through the “forgot password” option, until google sends a verification code to your phone. The person acting interested will ask for that google verification code to “make sure you’re a real person”. If you’re naïve enough to hand over that code, they are in your email and have access to all your personal information hidden in your email. Disgusting really. I’m not dumb enough to fall for it, so I always tell them to get lost and block their number. Anyone else?

I wonder what they'd do if you gave them the wrong number.

Yikes, I'm sorry. Never had that happen but here in Utah we've got KSL Classifieds, which is the biggest classifieds outfit we have, bigger (and way better) than CL. Every time I post something I get a ton of scammers. Here's the most recent, where I play along, as I tend to do when I'm bored:

I just use my cell# as contact whenever I sell on CL, never a problem.

I imagine similar to how those phone call scammers are when you waste their time

If you’re taking multiple screenshots for the sake of capturing a whole conversation, try the app “tailor”, it combines the screenshots into one big picture

This wouldn't work if you use the Craigslist email relay which conceals the real email addresses to both parties. I'm paranoid, so I never give out my cell# or email address until after I reach a deal and set up a meeting through the Craigslist email system. I guess I assume the worst in people. And usually I'm right.

100% of them are not in the state and it has nothing to do with MLM. Nice try, though. ;)

It’s a life saver. They’ll show up in your panarama folder too. If you post it somewhere, it will likely compress the picture and make the contents hard to read though.

That's what I do. I use the relay email. In the ad I ask for the responder's name and phone number and ask them to mention the product name in their response. Then I call them. If they just refer to it as "the item" and don't send a phone number I delete their email.

You mean Utah is not the MLM Capital of the World? TIL.

EDIT: Weird that anyone would do CL across state lines. Dead giveaway that they're scammers.

I DO NOT give my info to anyone on CL!!!

---and unless it something too big to go in the truck, they are NOT coming to my residence; I'll meet somewheres...

If they try that on you offer them a ridiculously cheap deal on your goods. When they arrive to do the deal break their kneecaps, take their wallet and head to their place to clean them out while they are crawling to the hospital. Scammers deserve it. You would also be doing a great service for all their other potential victims.

I get scam offers almost every time I post on CL. I get the "I'm out of the country, but my agent will come by with a check BS."

I text them back "f**k off scammer. They go away.
