Out of curiosity, what brand(s) (and makes) of coupling caps do you use in which posistions, in your 5F6A builds...and why?

Just a fun survey.

Thanks!

Tone stack:
Mallory 150's and a CDE Silver mica. The Mallory's seem to come closet to the sound of the originals.
Driver:
Usually Mallory' 150's or AudioCap Theta .1's for what I perceive as a sweeter more singing tone.

This is generally my choice for most Fender based amps and recaps of Fender amps. Have also used Auricaps or Kimber caps if someone wants a clearer, more ""high resolution" tone.
Do not really like either 715 or 716 orange drops, I think the tone of these has changed over the years.Seems harsh. Something in construction or my imagination, one or the other.

Mine has all Mallory 150s and Silver Mica for the treble caps. I do not have the dog ears to tell the difference between say Mallorys and Orange drops but I can at least say the Mallorys don't sound worse.

Just for fun I put Mallorys and a silver mica in the tone stack of the Vibrato channel of my Twin and left the ceramic and blue drop caps in the normal channel. They sound different but I wouldn't say better or worse. And they would sound different anyway because of all the other stuff going on in the Vibrato channel.

Not a true comparison as different preamp tubes in V1 and V2 are ALSO being compared-when comparing the NORMAL and VIBRATO channels. Use the same preamp tube in both channels and report back.

That is one of the major difficulties with all of this stuff...many things sound different, but not better or worse. You have to get your ears to decide what they want!

My findings are similar to Dibber's, except that I think both Orange Drops and Mallorys are not quite what they used to be. Of course it could just be me, and maybe my ears are not quite what they used to be!

I have used .1uF Hovlands in the PI out to "open things up" for a more hi-res tone. In fact, just one well placed Hovland can have a nice clearing effect on an overly muddy amp. A well placed Sozo cap can add a cool compressing/gritty character. One is enough, as over doing them can easily make the amp cross over to the other side (Marshall tone).

I haven't tried Audio Cap Thetas, but will do so.

For whatever reason(s), I find 5F6A circuits more difficult to pin down to my liking than other amps. Again, maybe my ears are due for a service? ;-)
