    Howdy,

I'm curious what you would consider standards in the country world. I'm real into the Bakersfield, outlaw, honky tonkin stuff without the backup singers, strings, clap tracks, and suburban cowboys.

I've been digging into some of Merle's classics like The Bottle Let Me Down, Swinging Doors, Mama Tried, etc. What are some of the most played songs in your experience you MUST know if you're a Tele slangin' rapscallion (and looking to get into that honky tonk scene)?

What are some of your favorite lead and songs with great parts for electric?

Thank ya! I'm newer to playing this music, and I'm trying to check all the boxes and get a good foundation so I can eventually be a sideman/start a band after the plague.

(I'm already pretty comfortable with hybrid pickin', and I'm learning a lot from the great Redd Volkaert.)

Good Hearted Woman - Waylon Jennings
Don't Come Home a' Drinking with Lovin On Your Mind Loretta Lynn (also listen to The Pill for kicks)

Dwight Yoakam especially up to about 2004 when Pete Anderson was playing guitar for Dwight. Pete has some real tasty picking. I have learned quite a few DY songs.

Six Days on the Road = Dave Dudley

The Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line = Waylon

The The Race is On and White Lightning = George Jones

I’m partial to a lot of late 80’s, early 90’s country.

Radney Foster’s “Just Call Me Lonesome” and “Nobody Wins”

Hal Ketchum’s “Past The Point of Rescue”

Steve Earle’s “Guitar Town” (gotta go drop D to do it)

    and of course Dwight.

A tele has to be the most popular country instrument by now. A fiddle or pedal steel might be more iconic, but not in the last 20 years. So, I'd say the answer is all of them.

Thanks for all the replies! I'll be making my way through your lists. It's a pipe dream, but it'd be amazing to play with Don Kelley someday. Happy pickin', everyone
