I have a real soft spot for country from the mid to late 80's to mid nineties. Somebody already mentioned Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle - the thing that got me listening to country (again) was a Stereo Review double "Album of the Month" in 1985 that went to "Guitars Cadillacs etc etc" (Dwight)" and "Guitar Town" (Steve Earle). Other artists from that period that are worth listening to are Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, George Strait, Kim Richey, Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen.
One guy who had one heck of a band (the Overtones) and two great albums was Kevin Welch, he never made it "big" though:

And like somebody else already mentioned: Marty Stuart!!

For country with rock swagger, I'd look to the 70s outlaws...Waylon and David Allan Coe, for starters. Also, Gram Parsons work with the Byrds, Burritos, and solo.

I first heard this song performed by John Doe on Terry Gross's "Fresh Air."
