Who can share great country music recommendations? When I think of „country“ - style music that I enjoy it is mostly of bands and musicians of the 70‘s that were inspired by country music rather than being full fledged country musicians themselves. I am thinking Rolling Stones (Dead Flowers, Sweet Virginia, Let It Bleed), Elton John (Tumbleweed Connection, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy), Eagles.
There‘s a sort of rock n roll, dirty spirit mixed into the style of country music they came up with. I also like Bonnie Raitt (Angel from Montgomery), Joni Mitchell (California), The Band (The Weight) among many other Southern Rock bands and folk musicians that were inspired by country music. I am thinking Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bob Dylan and countless others.

The point is I like much music that is inspired by country music of that era but am less familiar with great country music of that era or the previous era that inspired the Brits and other American musicians to create their own take on it.
Could any of you country aficionados share great country music and musicians that I might enjoy?

Thank you 🙏

Since you mentioned the 70's I'd suggest listen to (50's) Hank Williams Sr, (50's) Ray Price, (60's) Buck Owens, (late 60's early 70's) Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, (70's and 80's) Hank Williams Jr and for later stuff (80's and 90's) George Strait and Dwight Yoakam. There are many more but that's a good place to start.

Buck Owens and the Buckaroos, Merle Hagard and the Strangers for the "Bakersfield" sound.

George Jones,Patsy Cline, Lefty Frizzell for the "Nashville" sound.

Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings for "Outlaw" country.

Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys for "Western Swing."

Check out Gram Parsons. He is the guy Keith Richards had over the French Riviera to help him with his "country" playing during the recording of "Beggar's Banquet". He was a solo artist, as well as a member of the Byrds, and The Flying Burrito Brothers.

I have enjoyed these country fake books for many years. I have both the blue and the green. They contain tunes from many country artists.

Here's an excellent story song that I'm sure only a handful of us have ever heard. Im pretty sure if you give it a listen, you'll be a fan.

Johnny Cash with Waylon Jennings doing The Night Hank Williams Came To Town.

I don’t know much country music, but I really like Ernest Tubb. His music is what I think about when I hear the Son Volt line: “Searching for a truer sound . . . It sounds like 1963, but for now it sounds like heaven.”

Back in 1927, just two months after Lindbergh flew solo across the Atlantic ocean Ralph Peer took his newfangled Western Electric microphone and tape deck to Bristol Tennessee and recorded 76 songs by local performers. The musical acts included Jimmy Rogers and The Carter Family, arguably the two founders of modern country music. These sessions initiated the careers of these two artists and the commercialization of country music in America. Johnny Cash called it "The most important event in the history of country music."

If you wanted to pick a beginning of American Country Music you could start with these two.

I can't even, anymore. Outside of a handful of outsider artists, you've gotta go back some 40 years at this point. And that makes it a museum piece

With very very few exceptions , "country music" is now soccer mom stuff

If you want some country guitar, maybe check chicken picking out. It refers to the particular styles of playing in country music. Brent mason, johnny hiland, merle jagger...

There was a cool instrumental song called champagne that i tought was played by merle haggard, or waylon jennings but can't find it back.
