My band is considering a travel gig to Halifax. It's a private event at the Casino Nova Scotia...client is renting a room or hall or whatever they have there. Anyway, the client is saying they are also going to try and get us gig the following night (Saturday, March 23) at the casino...i.e. paid by casino.

Aside from the obvious that how in the world is the client going to talk us in to a gig at the casino, my question is: do they have bands there? I see from the web that they have "shows" with bands and tickets and so forth...that would not be us. We would be more like a lounge act, if they have that.

    Thanks!

    It's OK. We'll take anyone.

UPDATE: Since I posted this 30 minutes ago, we've booked the Friday night gig...the private event at the casino.

I'm skeptical the client will be able to also wrangle us a Saturday night gig at the casino somehow, but...we're going either way.

Any useful/fun info on the casino or Halifax in general (none of us have been there) is still much appreciated!!!

Haven’t been there in a long time but I think I ate at the casino or the hotel attached to it? Maybe? Lobster rolls?

Halifax style gyros at 2am after a good night out. Weird sweet sauce. Condensed milk? Probably doesn’t make much sense sober.

It’s a fairly small city and the core is quite compact. Are you interested in history/museums. My ex had an aunt who lived right beside the cemetery where many of the victims of the Titanic are buried. Dunno if that sounds like a good time but apparently it draws tourists.

It’s been too long for me to recommend anything, I’ll leave that to the locals. I will say that I have enjoyed my visits there. Pubs may have been involved.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Thanks everybody for the info! We are trying to get air travel from DC and equipment rental up yonder sorted out now.

Appreciate the info, TDPRIers. Just to update, after a week of hemming and hawing by the client on air travel, they finally booked flights, and sent us payment for the performance in advance.

The additional Saturday night gig never materialized (as I predicted) so it looks like I will have ZERO additional time to enjoy Halifax. My flight arrives hours before the gig, and I fly out the next morning at 0800. But the gig is a family affair, so I anticipate it will be a fun way to meet the locals and experience the city in that way!

Too bad as it really is a nice little city.

The airport is way out of town. On purpose. To try and avoid getting fogged In as Halifax is right on the coast so the airport is 20 miles inland or something like that.

Anywho, have a fun gig. Doubt I’ll ever get out there again.

    Cheers,
    Geoff

Thanks, Geoff! It does sound like a nice city...we have been talking with music stores up there about instrument rental, and they have been GREAT!

I'm seriously worried about March weather...here in DC, in Halifax, or wherever my connection is. I do not have any margin for weather delays.:eek::eek:

Buy some lobster at the airport to take home. They put them in styrofoam containers on dry ice. Yum. Giant delicious sea bugs!

    Cheers,

Just reporting back in. The gig was great!

Travel from DC and back was uneventful but still exhausting. Flew out Thursday 10:00pm, layover, etc., got to soundcheck on Friday with 2 hrs of (sort of) sleep, played the gig, went to the after-party, slept for 4 hrs, and flew home...then slept for 17 hrs (not exaggerating).

The people up there in Nova Scotia are second to none. As nice and friendly as anywhere I've been.

Geoff, I saw those lobsters there! They looked delicious! I wanted some so bad, but I was already pushing my luck with carry-on luggage. Perhaps my next time in the Maritimes!

Glad you had a great gig/time. Too bad about the lobsters, and it doesn’t sound like you had drunken gyros so I don’t think you can really say you’ve been there.

But still sounds like a good time. How was the casino?

    Cheers,
    Geoff
