I chatted with him briefly when I met him at my guitar tech's shop. He was having an acoustic guitar checked out, and we chatted while waiting our turn. He clearly had the guitar bug; that's all we talked about. I pretended like I didn't recognize him, he was gracious and kind. It was one of those "did that really just happen?" moments. I would call him a regular guy, but that doesn't give him the credit he deserves. In the moment, we were just 2 dudes excited about having our guitars set up. RIP Malcolm.....

Malcom-Jamal Warner’s character Theodore was one of the best parts of The Cosby Show.
RIP

I hate to be “that guy” but it’s a rip current not a rip tide.

I'm happy to be "that guy". It was likely a riptide, not a rip current (they are 2 separate things). A rip current is close to shore, the rip tide has a much greater pull and is likely what dragged him out to sea.

He was excellent as Shirley’s deadbeat ex husband in community. Obviously he’ll he remembered mostly for his role in the now problematic Cosby show (only one cast member made it problematic) but he was a quality actor.

I used to watch The Resident, a medical drama. He played an arrogant surgeon who backed up his arrogance with great surgical skills. Somehow, Malcolm made an arrogant character not unlikeable.

I have a friend that was on a dive team that did work for the state police and different sheriffs office. Hot summer sun and a lake with some alcohol can easily turn into a tragedy. I won't accuse the guy of anything, but it's possible.

RIP to guy that was too young.
I don't even know if he was a drinker, but apparently he got caught in a bad riptide. We've had very bad riptides around here, and during July 4th weekend in Newport Beach they had over 350 rescues. If he was on a beach that didn't have a lifeguard, or very few, he would be out of luck. People tend to panic and not do what they're supposed to do, which is just swim parallel to the beach to get out of the riptide. RIP

I remember The Resident. She liked it and I became a convert. A great character! I never realized it was an adult Theo.

That's the way to handle it, very low key. My dad and I ran into Terry Bradshaw at an auto parts store in Mansfield, Louisiana, and handled it much the same.
Mr. Bradshaw was chatting at the counter with a couple other people, we just spoke briefly about random things.
And I felt the same way you did--my father and I looked at each other afterwards and said, "that was really him, right?"

You have a great memory now, as do I.
