Correct tolex?

Need some info. Finally getting around to finishing some projects I've put off.

I've got a 1953 Gibson GA-40 Les Paul model amp. Surprisingly, after I cleaned it up and applied adhesive to the peeling tolex, it looks surprisingly good for a nearly 70 year old amp! I believe everything was original when I bought it except the handle and back panel were missing. I love the way the octal preamp tubes sounds; very Oscar Moore-ish (Nat King Cole trio guitarist), IMO.

I have fit a replacement wooden panel on the back and will place aluminum tape on the concealed side to help with rf shielding after I apply the correct tolex.

I've examined several of the commercially-available tolex offerings and there are two that may be correct:

    A. Mojotone Brown Ostrich Tolex / 54'' W

    or

    B. Mojotone Brown Alligator Tolex / 54'' W
    <https://www.mojotone.com/Mojotone-Brown-Alligator-Tolex-54-W>

Does anyone know which is correct or who would know for sure? Is Mojotone a good source for tolex? Any alternative sources?

To my eye the Brown Ostrich seems correct but I'm open to hearing more informed opinions. Thanks in advance.

Beautiful amp. I’m guessing it’ll be hard to match the tolex exactly, nearly 70 years on. Can you take a pic at this approximate scale re grain and texture? This is the Mojo ostrich and alligator on their page…

Here's a close up of the 70-yr old tolex:

I don't think that's either .... it looks more like a brown levant

this is purple levant... looks like a similar texture.

Mojo has really good customer service. Ask them. They will respond.

I think this may match the color better:
    reverb-tolex.JPG
It's from Tube Town in Germany, this:
    https://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/tolex-tube-town-cocoa-coffee.html
could be the same as this:
    https://www.mojotone.com/Mojotone-Cabernet-Tolex-54-W
However, it's not possible to recreate the lighting conditions to match photographs without special equipment. You should really ask for samples before buying.

Also, none of the ones posted in this thread will match the texture exactly. That Gibson has bigger objects in the pattern than the ones I posted.

I used some elk hide that I got from a local leather supply store to match my 1955 GA40T Les Paul’s dark tolex. Good enough match for me.

Thanks for all of the input.

    K-Floor - I will call Mojotone.

Si-G X - the color is very close but the texture isn't close enough. I will have to consider it if something better doesn't come along.

Si-G X & Wally - I will go out tonight and hunt down either an elephant (pachyderm texture) or elk but only use the hide after eating the meat all at one sitting. Looks like I picked a bad time to become a vegan.

Radio - that cabernet color is the closest so far.

My mother would have covered it all in pastel floral contact paper. Can you even get contact paper any more? We wrapped her casket in it. :p
