I usually put my Princeton Reverb up on a high back bar stool, it usually gives me about 5 inches of space in the front when I push the amp back against the back of the chair. I had a guest singer coming in last night to sing a few tunes with us so I plugged a mic in and put it down lying in front of the amp side ways, kind of just laying there, nothing special. Anyhoo, I had the channel turned upfor that mic and it picked up all the nice frequencies of the amp and it added a nice depth to the sound too. It did not sound mic'd it sounded just real natural coming out of the PA. A really nice sound, sounded like it sounds when I am standing in front of my amp and it picked up the dynamics and volume changes really nicely.
Give this a shot on your next gig, I promise you will love the sound.
