“if they can’t tell offstage you are in the band, you aren’t properly dressed.”
I would switch that up to say "if you have to wear a costume for people to know you're in a band.....". Unless it's a themed band or occasion I just don't get dressing up for a gig. Just get up and play.

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through this thread, and I must say, Lonn, your perspective, though probably not the dominant one, is interesting and well-taken.

You have it all wrong, my dear friends. You and your band members get super white lab coats, black slacks, with a
white shirt under the lab coats, and call yourselves "The Technicians". Devo ain't nothin'.

I don't care about "stage clothes". I'm about the music. Everyday clothing, including cargo shorts, is fine. But when I see a band with obvious poser wear, they better be good.
In my mind the minimum acceptable talent bar is higher.
The best way to sabotage your babd is letting the singer, or guitarist's girlfriend control the bands wardrobe.
And unless it's super outrageous or uniquely comic, if I even see a band with matching outfits I'm out the door, much less required to wear it.
