Hello Stratophiles,

My nephew has an american strat (95) with a floyd rose and he'd like to convert it to the standard fender tremelo system... he just showed it to me and well... before we go too far....

is this a doable thing?

Also, he has the locking nut and wants to go with a standard nut... again, factory cutting appears to have taken place...

Any help or advice would be appreciated!

from what i gathered while looking for a geektar with a Floyd, they are pretty much swappable, provided that the floyd is just sitting on top of the body, not recessed.

I'm not so sure about the nut though.

I'd call it a wash and swap guitars. The floyd rose unit almost certainly came with some serious routing, and the locking nut and bar-tensioner will leave some screw holes that would require some professional-level work to conceal (if that's important to your nephew).

I think that he should sell the floyd rose strat--someone will want it--and buy a new or used strat with a traditional unit. Just my opinion as a former long-time floyd rose user.

Get rid of it. Save time and money.

It would be possible to leave the nut as is, just take off the three little clamps . . but it would still be a compromise.

I agree with all the advice above, but have to express my sympathy. Am strat, with a floyd? Poor B$%rd, I hope he gets well soon and gets a nice guitar after living with that.

it takes some skillfull work but i have blocked off a recessed floyd before just by shaping a piece of wood to fit the joint, then i secured it only with screws so i could always change ot back and stuck a hard tail on there :)

+1.

To ya'll Kahler and Floyd modders: Try harder to swap for an existing Floyd or Kahler, rather than trying to create still another. I see them; they're out there, looking for someone to adopt them. Be kind to your non Floyd guitar and trade it to someone who likes such a guitar as is.

I walk into the Carvin store on Hollywood ( around 4; they always ask if I'm parked on the Street, and I appreciate that ). I hate to just look around, then go. They have so many (Floyded) guitars, but the place is always empty. No-one to buy them.

I'm wishin I had my floy'd guitar back...I'm a wiz at the talent bar. But mine has finally (26 yrs. old) bit the big one and is ready for burial.

I even said I wish'd I had a strat with a floyd this evening at rehearsals. To each his own though, and fortunately I have several guitars to choose from (all floydless though)...for now when it comes time to get my whammy on...I'm out in the cold.

That's why I'm lookin for a new "Ibanez"! I gotsta have my whammy! SHHHHH! (Don't tell my Esquire)
