Sorry, if this is the wrong section...

I use to build amps years ago and burned out then my health went south. I'm on the nend and my attitude is better.

So, I have started a 5E3 build. I was going to get a Trinity kit but decided to piece meal it. So far I have the chassis and a few small parts.

And, while seaching through my old parts bins for parts for the 5E3 I found a 5F1 I had built and tore down chasing a hum (bad new filter cap), well anyway it's going back together as well.

The transformers in the 5F1 are a Mercury PT and the OT is from a silverface Champ. The 5E3 will get MM.

Prevagen is working for me. Plus, seeing a cool youtube video inspired me.

Cool projects. Search this forum for 5E3 and for 5F1. You'll get enough posts to read for 2 days.

You are in the right section. The Shock Brothers like to have pictures so you're off to a good start.

Good to hear you are winning the health battle. Looking forward to the builds. Keep posting.

Good for you. Since it’s not your first rodeo, you’ll know best, but I might rebuild the 5f1 while assembling parts and doing some planning for the 5e3 to follow. Many of the challenges in these two amps are the same, so honing your approach (modern Rob-style power wiring, lead length and routing, heater wiring options) on the one will make the other easier and 'better' in whatever way you choose.

Both as you know are crowded houses. I remember this helpful thread with great example pics of various 5e3 builds that helped me a ton when I built my second one.

King Fan, your build is beautiful. Parts are needed for both builds. I am putting my efforts into the 5E3.

    Here is where I am at now;

The OT and more parts will get here next week... more to come.

    Cool about your health!

Regarding building by parts: I built a 5E3 five years ago and never played it. Last weekend I replaced all the board parts (well most) with salvaged old stuff I have been saving and now I play it the amp for hours every day. I can't believe how much of a difference the parts made. Excess bass and mids were reduced and chords don't sound mushy anymore. Hopefully it holds together.

    Keep us updated!

oh and my 5F1 is next so we're on the same boat it seems.

Thanks MB, I bet your amp sounds great. Fortunately, I have access to a genuine 59 Deluxe to compare to when done...

The OT showed up today. I'm going to get some clear RTV to use to help hold wires close to the chassis. edit to add... wire training in progress...

And, the wire training continues... I am trying to keep high current wiring against the chassis as much as possible. I can finish 5E3C210101wiretraining1.JPG wiring the PT when I get my octal sockets (that's a whole 'nuther story)...

Nice! That’s a very tidy start on the wiring.

3rd times a charm, doh, poor eyesight and cheap rulers will cost you when buying tube sockets... I picked up some good ole Cinch sockets for the 5E3... (took 3 try's to get the right ones).

Okay, the heaters are wired and I started on the eyelet board and realized I had no 100K ohm resistors... doh... In my case, what I save doing a scratch build vs kit, I spend in shipping fees... doh...
