    it's the American way!

it's all cheap because business competes - hooray for the cheapest provider. Lower prices, higher profits. It's money that matters, that's all.

I pay for my stuff, so who cares about any greater issues? I got mine.

No one competes to provide water or electric service. They are regulated services. There is one provider in your area. However, you understand capitalism, so you got that going. I doubt it's much different where you live.

I shut it down but only because the start up is really quick, less than 10 seconds including logging in and everything is on a SSD so it's the same for the programs. I did leave my old laptop in sleep mode most of the time, startup took a while on that machine.

Sleep mode is fine but your should shut your computer or restart it at least once a week. If you don’t, the RAM never clears and impact performance. Not a major impact but a full power cycle takes less than five minutes which is worth it for improved stability.

Laptops and netbooks I shut down. The power units just get too hot.

For desktop, Monitors off, mixer off, leave the desktop on. Did this with office PC's minus the mixer for 20 years. Maybe had 2 out of 40 go out with bad power supplies and a few hard drives. I do however clean the case and CPU fans quite often. We had UPS at the office and I have small ones in the house for quick power losses.

I come from the old school belief that power on/off takes a toll. Probably antiquated but it is how I treat computer stuff.

I was thinking a narrow brush if just painting America - competition is everywhere.

Also a good point. All of us are wasteful, and only us, apparently.

Switch off, turn off the power. Saves on electricity and, more importantly, I’ve seen more than one fire attributed to computers left in standby mode or turned off but plugged in.

I never used to turn off only sleep mode but with my new machine and Windows 10 it has a mind of its own updating whenever and sometimes gets stuck. I try to shut down more often no just to keep things clean.

as a painter by trade, I can assure you that sometimes a broad brush is the tool that works best.

Sleep mode but I restart once every couple of days. Also, when I bought the machine I had a lot of problems getting sleep mode and hibernate mode to work properly. I had to reinstall Windows a couple of times and there was a startup program that was interfering. I eventually got it to work - knock on wood. Two year old Windows 10 machine. I had a Windows 7 machine before this one that I upgraded to Windows 10. That worked for about 8-10 months. Then an update threw it out of whack and I have never gotten it to boot up properly since. That is even after a Windows 10 scratch install.
