Here's my beater frankenstein. This is an older 51 that had been rattle can painted three colors thick. I got the paint of but it was kinda rough so I decided to make me a super gaudy sparkly nashville type guitar. I loaded it up with some super sparkly fingernail polish and then a bunch of coats of watco laquer spray. I took the pickguard off and filled the holes, so it made it look kind of like a Charvel. I had a Lollar dogear P90 and was dying to try it on a tele but it's pretty impossible without switching to a wraparound type tailpiece because of the pickup height. Stacked single coil out of an old ESP in the neck. I put my old 51 neck on another tele that I sold, so I put a classic vibe tele neck I had on it. It's pretty ugly but looks pretty cool under stage lights.

I finally bought a 51. I like the neck pickup but I don't think much of the humbucker. has anyone found a P90 style that works in this context?

I believe it was my 2nd 51' (first run years ago), I installed a slightly upgraded Strat neck pup and a GFS Mean 90 as upgrades. I recall liking it a good bit.

Here is my "51' Junior." I pulled the neck pup, installed a "no holes" black Strat pup cover, as an alternative to spending $50 on a no-route pickguard, and a Tonerider Rebel 90 in the bridge. I like the Rebel 90 better than the Mean 90. I think the Rebel is as close to a proper P90 one can get in a budget humbucker sized P90.

This is my El Cheapo, "beater," take anywhere guitar, and it sounds great! I wanted an inexpensive platform, and when the 51 was reissued, I knew I'd have another. I purposely didn't spend a lot on anything, including the strap!

Squier 51: $180 (New from Amazon. Couldn't find them in town)
Tonerider Rebel 90: FREE (Amazon gave me a $50 gift card)
    Amp knobs: $5
500k CTS Pots: FREE (had from a very old project)
    Strap: $2.50
    Pup covers: $5
Gig Bag: FREE (from my bass player)
    Total: $192.50

I like that idea.It has a great neck but it's very bright and really needs a tone control.Im actually tempted to remove the bridge pickup but I can't think of how to do it without it looking terrible

    I put in a Gibson P94 (humbucker-sized P90) and I like it.

I was in the same boat as you...decided on a GFS surf 90 and it's INCREDIBLE! I retasked the push-pull to switch between parallel and series. Also intentionally wired the GFS out of phase with the neck pickup And that's a lot of fun too.

Here is mine, 05 51. Only thing I have done to it is clean, strings, setup and install a treble bleed. BIG improvement ending the tone roll off on the volume pot.

    No kidding.

Is that an existing '51 body or a homemade routed for a single in the bridge?
    Good job on the finish

I love the Squier 51 guitar! I have a 2005 which I'd gotten from a friend and have learned to love and appreciate it very much!
