Youch, that's scary. Tell Todo's Mom we all are glad she is safe and many prayers and best wishes are coming your way. Last year my wife pulled through an out-of-the-blue emergency appendectomy with complications; I know how it feels. So sorry you are having troubles. Blessings to your family.

Yes I am, so's my daughter, and she knows how to get things done with medical people. That's her field of expertise, and luckily this is the one time of year she is available to help with this situation. My son has been super supportive, and knows how to talk to doctors on their level. He's not a doctor, but he's a professional engineer, and has a degree in physics, he gets up to speed pretty quickly on any subject. My daughter has already lined her mother up with appointments into next month to see some specialists.

Warfarin seems to be the culprit. She needs it, has been on it for some time, and the accumulative effects combined with some intestinal problems led to a severe undetected infection, and bleed out. We're looking at options such as a pacemaker, different medications, more to come as the specialists put their heads together. If we don't do something different, the problem will most likely return. None of us want that. Fortunately we have good insurance, and a good family physician who was there when we needed him. Hopefully we'll get together a workable game plan.

My wife used Warfarin for two or three years, it was good for a while, then her numbers started a roller coaster and they couldn't get them stabilized. Her doctor took her off it, and moved her to Xarelto. It works well, but is EXTREMELY expensive. If you end up in that position, the manufacturer has a program that pays a big chunk of the expense. If you want particulars, p.m. me.

Right now they have her off everything except digoxin until they are sure the bleeding has stopped completely and doesn't return over the next few weeks. We'll see what comes, and I will mention Xarelto to the doc, and go from there. If he feels it's an option for her I'll get in touch. Thanks a lot for the reply and suggestion.

My mom's sister died of a sudden bleed out in her brain attributed to proper-doses of warfarin some 25-30 years ago (she was in her 60s), and for that reason, my mom always refused to take thinners, even though she has a-fib. 6 weeks ago, at 92, she had a major ischemic stroke, which may have been prevented had she been taking warfarin BUT 5 years ago she fell in the garage and hit the back of her head hard, so may have have a major brain bleed IF she were on warfarin at the time. As it turned out, she was fine after the fall.

We've talked to a lot of docs and nurses about warfarin (coumadin), and they all say they have very mixed feeling about it. Basically, it's a crap shoot, seems to be the bottom line. One nurse said basically you could hit your own head with your hand, and cause a bleed. So you weigh everything, and make a decision. IMHO my mom made the correct decision. BTW she also has very thin veins and fragile skin, very prone to bruising. Probably not a good candidate for warfarin.

So I hope you guys find a good solution, hopefully with the pacemaker and/or another less dangerous drug.

My warfarin has been on that roller coaster ride for most of the last six years.... but it was ok until I got my first pacemaker.... go figure.

Hope your wife gets things stabilized.
