Our one neighbor moved, and when she was clearing out her garage, she found a homemade quoits set. I think she said they were made by her father-in-law.

Anyway she asked my wife if we would like to have them, and my wife said yes. We put them on our patio and played occasionally. We made the mistake of leaving them out all winter. As a result, they got stained from pine sap.

I tried to clean them with a brush, soap, and water to no avail. They appear to be made of slate. I thought I’d check with the TDPRI intelligentsia before I try something drastic that might deface the surface.

These things are heavy!! I’d say they weigh 50-60 lbs. each (about 25kg). I’m more of a horseshoes guy, but what the heck.

Thanks in advance for any input.

The interwebs say solvents - alcohol probably best for pine sap. Otherwise maybe pressure wash.

Edit: Simple green gets some recommendations too.

When I was a kid I learned to clean sap using butter. It works a charm on hands. I suspect that olive, corn or any houshold oil would work equally well. Then you just use what you would use to get rid of the fat. Soap or dish detergent.

However, I can't vouch for the result on that surface.

As said, alcohol works too, but it usually takes a lot of it to get good result.
