A traditional aprés pub standby is the ol' fish finger sammich. It's close to the New Orleans Po'boy in taste.

I think you are correct, I've heard the same thing.

Primanti's is best enjoyed at 2:00 am after drinking all night. The way I see it, you've already done the real damage by the time you think that one of those sandwiches is a good idea. That's been my experience at least.

I still haven't got passed the baked beans on toast; haven't made it to consider the chip butty yet.

Cardiologists have killed more people than good chefs ever will. Enjoy a nice Chip Butty or better yet a Bacon Butty and have a pint afterwards.

Must be beef dripping, but got to be a mug of tea.

Ketchup is for dipping chips in when you don't have a bap or a couple of slices to make a buttie. Vinegar is what is called for.

Landlord is an excellent brew, but a pot of tea will cut through anything.

Brown sauce is for pork pie, preferably from Wilsons in Queen Street Morley (Was Greens Pork Butchers in my day).

Yes you do mean scraps or bits.

Last place my brother lived in this country was Huddersfield, then he went to Sudan, Kenya, Iraq, Libya, and now Myanmar, I worry about his sanity too.

These are too pale, they should at least be antique violin burst.

Quite possibly. It's the only photo I could find on the internet. Here in Oz it would more likely have sesame seeds on top.

Your recipe is pretty much spot on. Soft, processed sliced white bread, loads of salted butter and medium sized (also salted) chips.

You can add mayonnaise as well.

The only difference I make to your version is I double the chip layer - overlaying a second row of chips at 90 degrees to the first. You need to squash the sandwich down a bit to stop the chips falling out, but the extra chips make it all worthwhile.

White bread - tick. Salted Butter - tick. Fat chips - tick. However they should be laid parallel to the fold in the bread never at right angles. No sauce of any description should used, extra salt permitted though. A permissible side dish are pickled onions eaten sans cutlery. An alternative to a chip butty is a nice thickly spread Picallili sandwich.

Obviously the bread used for a chip butty must be a white breadcake.

It must never be referred to as anything else its not a bun, a roll, a cob, a teacake, a barm cake or any other bizarre name folks use its quite simply a breadcake.

As for a side dish how about a pickled egg?

Folks do call breadcakes the strangest names don't they? Please keep the pickled eggs at your end of town. :D
