Looking at the plague of Chinese Dodgy Diploma postings, is it maybe time to introduce one of those 'I am not a bot' things when logging on?

I think they are actual spammers doing it in person? They are posted at staggered times not all at once. They change names too, a couple different names one at a time one after the other. I have tried to get them worked up enough to respond by using google translator but no go. Maybe the site should feature something illegal in China so they risk prosecution by visiting here?

    That's pretty funny!

If there's even one legitimate Telecaster affeciando in China, it's not fair that they get blocked due to a few unscrupulous comrades.

Instead of a generic "click all the photos of bridges" spam filter, how about a filter that requires at least a basic knowledge of the telecaster or guitar?

For example, "How many pickups are on a Tele?

"Which famous Fender guitar has three pickups?"

"The Limeys call 'em valves, the Yanks just call' em ______."

    Or complete the following...

    "Whammy ___"

    "Truss ___"

    Humbuckers and single ____ pickups"

"Not quite distortion, it's just over______."

    "Rosewood or ______"

Better than running off potential forum members who happen to be in China...

    Just a thought.

Can’t they set up the forum so you can’t start a thread until you’ve replied to ten posts or got 10 likes something?

There’s no way somebody is doing this manually; given the odds of getting a bite from these, it wouldn’t be worth the effort.

Yes, yes they can. I belong to a motorcycle forum where you can't post any links until you have posted at least 3 normal posts.

It's been repeated so very often... just ignore the user ID that is posting the spam, and poof, it's all gone

It's so easy-peasy and effective that it's really not even worth talking about IMO.
I would suggest maybe a permanent "sticky" with information on dealing with the issue, in this way.
And then everyone can shush about it

The ignore function doesn’t operate that way on the phone app. The threads still clog the feed, you just don’t see the content if you open them.

    Like free speech?

But seriously, this is annoying. Valuable posts get lost among the spam. There should be a simple solution, right?

    Uh, yes it is.

I'd guess that the Great Firewall of China is keeping the population of online telecaster aficionados down to a manageable level: 0.

Here's how it works and why "I Am Not a Bot" won't work...

Somebody pays these people $5 or so for 1000 forum posts. They probably aren't in China due to the "Great Firewall" but in some other Asian country connecting via various VPN's to make IP address blocking difficult.

The solution is to make this forum less inviting to new users, legit and spammers. I'd guess the admins have decided in favor of keeping it more open and dealing with the spammers instead of encouraging new users to go elsewhere.

I for one am grateful for them. No other way I could have gotten seventeen degrees from seventeen different prestigious colleges in almost no time!
I'm thinking of going for three or four doctorates.

    Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

I have to admit, I find myself using the "Ignore" feature more everyday.
