Looking for some advice. A few years ago, I found a used Chinese 5W Champ for a very low price. I played it briefly, didn't like it and put it aside.

The main reason was that it was quite loud for its size and wasn't what I was expecting. So went back to my Helix :)

I recently pulled it out and am starting to enjoy it.

I'm not sure if this is a Champ issue or a problem with (presumably) low-quality parts, but it's very warm with a lot of bass (considerably more than my JCM800 Studio, which is nice), but also very mid-forward, almost like a weird spike in the mid EQ.

I was wondering if this is a tunable situation; replacing some board components can alter or reduce the mid bias slightly.

I had already replaced the tubes with a Tube store suggestion (mid-price option), and also wonder if perhaps there is a more "normal" 8" speaker that is favoured for Champs, rather than the random Chinese one it likely came with?
Maybe you should post a pic of the amp so we can all have a better idea of what you have.
"Chinese 5W Champ" is not really definitive.

I have a SF Vibro Champ. I put a weber in it years ago. It sounds good to me.
My amp and a pic of the label on the Weber.
