I've looked at Brian Wampler's book on modding pedals and am interested in destructing/improving some inexpensive effects boxes. A good amount of the pedals in Brian's book have gotten a bit on the expensive side in 2015.
Do any of you have any ideas for cool mods I might start with, say for around $50 total ?
I have a CS-3 and Bad Monkey, but at this point, there are things I really like about both of them, so I'm looking to start with something I'm not yet attached to!

Buy a used DS-1, and tweak the clipping diodes. Then tweak the tone controls. Total cost should be way under $50. Or buy a used NYC Muff and flatten the mids with one capacitor change. Should still be under $50.

http://www.monteallums.com/ has some great mods for many different pedals. I've heard that his CS-3 mods are likely the best available. Also WELL within your budget.

Switchable symmetric clipping mod on SD-1. Very easy, and it gives a nice choice in OD sounds. I happen to prefer the asymmetric mode, but if you like TS-type OD, the symmetric mode is OK.

I'd agree that the SD-1 is almost inexpensive and serves as a great platform for mods. The DOD OD250 & the MXR Dist + also have their own collection of mods, mostly involving diodes, I think.

Wah pedals are also a great modding platform. Voicing options sweep options you could build a fuzz right into the enclosure. Mod the wah to be a volume pedal and have a fuzz that cleans up as you rock the pedal with or without the wah effect. They are cheap and very easy to work on.

I've been thinking of doing that. I just had a snarling dogs blue balls wah go completely kaput as far as the overdrive and three-position wah. It still conducts through to the next peal though. Any ideas?

The problem is some component on the PCB, or maybe a loose wire. Probably not the footswitch.
