Great, now I need to get a lap steel.

In all seriousness, I've been lap steel curious for several decades but never pulled the trigger. Oddly enough, the source of my fascination was a singer of a mid-80s goth band who used a lap steel to create interesting textures and atmospheric melodies as opposed to the usual assortment of blues/country/Hawaiian lap steel styles.

Well, that was my next question. What kind/shape bar do folks recommend?
I like the Shubb SP2 - nice grip, like a Stevens, but rounded nose, like a bullet bar - makes playing slants and single note runs easier!

Also, if you're thinking about using a 6th tuning, like C6 or A6, and want to play Western swing & classic country (Hank Williams...), I recommend getting an 8-string lap steel right away - you have to learn a new tuning, and the symmetrically laid out 8-string 6th tunings (like C6 - ACEGACEG) are so logical and offer much more possibilities, and greater tonal range.
Disregard if you want to play bluesy rock stuff in open tunings, for that a 6-string is perfect!

Peavey Power Slide.
I was keeping an eye out for a cheap lap steel when I stumbled upon a Power Slide. Bigly score!

I've played more sessions on my Gretsch G5715 than I can count.

It is a very smooth-sounding guitar. The only oddity might be slightly more narrow string spacing. But fit and finish is excellent and the price is still less than $400 and you can get a nice gig bag for it as well. You can find a recorded example from fifteen years ago, HERE.

My review is HERE.

I’ve got one of these and the only thing I wish it had was some legs…but other than that, it sounds and plays and looks awesome…

Just jumping in to say that 8-strings are great if you have a plan and tuning for them. If you don't it's best to get a 6-string for now. Lots of amazing players have played every genre with 6 strings in many tunings, including jazz in Murphy tuning etc...

The Gretsch looks very nice and I kinda want one, too. But given lap steels are generally underappreciated instruments you can find vintage instruments for about the same money as newish ones. I eventually got a Silvertone from 1948 with the Gibson P13 pickup and it's a wonderful little beast.
