I had chatGPT write a full essay for me, and it did it well.
I then asked it to rewrite it again, and I got another completely different essay, that was also well written.

If it can to this with citations and references, in the styles of APA, MLA or Chicago, it would have major implications to our post secondary education system. My gut tells me that chatGPT can probably already do this.

FWIW, I read an article where its creators stated that it cannot do this, and they don't know how to add that as a feature (AI and explainability is a real problem)

It actually can't write an essay well. In the essay given above (now gone) there is little background given, the thesis is wishy washy, and the topic sentences lack direct/explicit links back to the thesis. It also fails at adding logical explanations after evidence to explain how they support the main ideas given. Just my two cents as a teacher of writing who has run across a few of these. I don't even need to get to the point of needing to prove the student has cheated, their grade already dies.

It is pretty much like the OP, it can spit some talk about tube amps, but it is just piecing together random bits off of the internet. Forgetting preamp tubes, my goodness.

Discussions of amplifier principles regurgitating online data is one thing. Amp design is something else.
Tell it to provide a schematic, parts list, layout diagram for the chassis for an original amp design, with construction plans and wood type, thickness and bracing for the speaker cabinet to provide a lively dynamic response with a slightly mid centric frequency emphasis using a Weber Bluedog.
"I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that."

Hi.

I used it a while back to write some ‘simple blues songs’ and ‘simple poems.’

Never got around to posting about it. I should.

You have to have an account and login to fiddle with Chat GPT?

Yes, and you have to give it your phone number.

Actually, it is, in the same manner that a transistor is.

Sorry, I get hung up on different minutiae.
True but it’s not the only one. So it is a confusing sentence bordering on nonsense in my opinion.

Rather than the chat bot writing dumb material like this, it should just provide a list of references from authoritative sources (you know, actual humans who have built tubes amp circuits ;)).

yes it depends on the field but it’s a major issue. it will probably kill off some practices that deserve to be killed off, like most of what gets assigned in freshman writing courses, and make evaluating students much more difficult.

Exactly.
This is why the AI thing isn't going away, the sheer volume of content will flood our conversation space and it will absolutely fool some people some of the time.

It already has. Do a google search for almost anything and 90% of what comes back now is AI-manufactured regurgitation. It's polluted search results so much that it's hard to find legitimate data now.

What you said reminds me a lot of what humans write on the internet. The bot is just a reflection of us.

I've just spent an hour at work wasting time on chatgpt. Had to repost this snippet for y'all:

Me: What is the difference between a black hole and a Fender twin reverb?

ChatGpT: A black hole and a Fender Twin Reverb are vastly different objects in the universe, with very different properties and effects.
A black hole is an astronomical object with an extremely strong gravitational pull, so strong that nothing, including light, can escape once it enters the black hole's event horizon. Black holes are formed when massive stars collapse under the force of their own gravity, and they are among the most mysterious and fascinating objects in the universe.

On the other hand, a Fender Twin Reverb is a type of guitar amplifier produced by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. It is known for its distinctive sound, which is characterized by a clean, bright tone and strong reverb effect. Unlike a black hole, a Fender Twin Reverb is a man-made object, designed specifically to amplify the sound of electric guitars.

In summary, the main difference between a black hole and a Fender Twin Reverb is that the former is a natural astronomical object with a strong gravitational pull, while the latter is a man-made musical instrument amplifier designed to produce a particular sound.

So that was interesting, sorta, but this was very impressive to me (that software can straight up do this writing task):

Me: What are some similarities between a black hole and a Fender twin reverb?

ChatGpt: While a black hole and a Fender Twin Reverb are fundamentally different in their nature and properties, there are a few similarities that can be drawn between them:

  1. Both are capable of producing incredibly powerful and intense effects. A black hole has an incredibly strong gravitational pull, while a Twin Reverb can produce a loud and powerful sound that can be felt as well as heard.
  2. Both can be seen as centers of attraction. A black hole's gravitational pull draws in surrounding matter and energy, while a Twin Reverb's powerful sound can draw in listeners and audiences.
  3. Both have been objects of fascination and study. Scientists have studied black holes extensively to better understand their properties and effects, while guitar players and music enthusiasts have studied and admired the unique tone and capabilities of the Fender Twin Reverb.
Overall, while there are some similarities between a black hole and a Fender Twin Reverb, they are fundamentally different objects with distinct properties and functions.
