Depends on the venue.....READ THE ROOM!

This is the only thing that matters when playing club gigs. If you play two danceable songs in short order and they sit down for the second one, then don't do that anymore. Your job is to entertain them and keep them at the club and ordering drinks, so do whatever that means for that crowd in that room on that night.

A couple weeks back a friend whom I played with 40 years ago touring the West Coast Circuit, and whom I have played with occasionally in recent years came to the gig. He plays regularly with others.

Your audience has probably changed in the last 40 years. With the exception of blues gigs, it's not common for a band to play to a significantly younger audience.

It’s all on how the crowd reacts at the moment. It’s not unusual to see a full dance floor first set, then barely anyone but all chairs turned toward bandstand in ‘listening to a concert’ mode…

Might be a good time to remind folks that when they are on the dance floor, they ain’t ordering drinks.
