In honour of the Gallagher brothers reuniting Oasis for their first tour since 2009, I recorded an excerpt of an instrumental cover of "Champagne Supernova", one of my favourites of theirs, in a quasi-jazzy style.

I always liked this one better than "Wonderwall" right from the word go. I remember my cousin owning the CD when it first came out and listening to "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back In Anger" on repeat -- when she wasn't looking, I'd turn on "Champagne Supernova" and bask in it.

I used to be a huge fan of Oasis and while I may not listen to or enjoy them as much as I used to, they were an important part of my musical development as a teen (especially as I grew from listening to The Beatles to The Stones/The Who). I lied my way into playing drums for the middle school band and to give myself a crash course, I drummed along on my schoolbooks with Alan White (along with Ringo, Charlie Watts, and Micky Dolenz) while listening to some of those classic Oasis songs on my Walkman.

I tried to imagine the melody line as played by Bill Frisell (having just seen him live again last week) or Emily Remler. If Oasis manages to finish the tour without breaking up beforehand, I will do a full cover of this song. If they finish the tour without the Gallagher brothers fighting, I'll even sing on my full cover. 😄

Enjoy and excuse any mistakes or other shortcomings!

I never was much of a fan of Oasis but my first band was heavily influenced by Oasis as the singer was a huge fan. We were trying to write and record our own songs at about 15 years old. Naturally we had to develop sort of a internal fight in the band just like the Gallagher brothers, which of course led me into camp Blur. I definitley favoured their records and attitude over Oasis but it was also a great way to annoy the hell out of him. We even revivied the old Beatles (him) vs. Stones (me) fight. We all were huge fans of the Verve, though. Anyway, I also think that Champagne Supernova is a great song, if not the greatest of them. Nice playing, too!

as a manc this almost gave me CPTSD remembering my first band when we covered it, god it was bad, so glad there are no videos or recordings of it to haunt me, similar story here to hallo spencer, singer who was an oasis superfan, I was just not into them, but I don't mind the odd song, covers of oasis was very popular in the early 2000s, almost feels like a lifetime ago now, but some good memories of it all.

Thank you!

I got into Blur around the same time and I would say Blur's songwriting and musicianship were/are more clever, but Oasis's swagger was irresistible to teenaged me. (Once I discovered the Stones, I realized that their swagger in turn was even cooler and a bigger influence on me musically in the long run.) As a result, I listened to Oasis more than Blur over time and have come to associate more of their songs with fond memories of my youth. If I'm honest though, I probably listen to Blur more now.

I am sorry for nearly giving you cPTSD. 🫣

I feel a similar way with my first high school band, where the other guitarist (my cousin) was big into Nirvana whereas I wasn't really. There was a push-pull dynamic between my Beatles/Stones-y leanings and his grunge/Nirvana fixation (sometimes to a fanatical degree, once even proclaiming that "Kurt Cobain died for us") that was one of many factors that eventually drove the band apart.
