Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm traveling but looking up your songs as I can.

    Thoughts:
1 I think he wants to use these songs for performance, not worship, as he specifically mentioned secular audiences.
2 We already do some with this bent - When Love Comes to Town, 40, Take Me To The River, Wayfaring Stranger, I'll Fly Away (Bo Diddly style!), jams built off old hymns - but I think he wants whole sets of it.
3 He mentioned a few singer-songwriter types as examples so Downtown Church, NTB's Brother, Buddy Miller, might be what he's looking for.
4 We're meeting Wednesday to talk more and I'll pick his brain and show him some of your suggestions. Thanks again, as always, for helping out.

John Mark McMillen might fit the bill. Really solid music and only a few of his songs are congregational (very few). In fact, I can't find a single song on Borderland that could be played in church. And Borderland had that Springsteen Tunnel of Love vibe going, great guitar work.

Speaking of Buddy Miller, quite a few of the songs Emmylou Harris does would fit as well -

    Where Will I Be

    Deeper Well

    Calling My Children Home

    All My Tears

    The Maker

They're all on her live recording, Spyboy.
