I recently found these old photographs that show the first 3 cars that I owned.

My 1st car is the Blue one (with body filler) in the background of this picture. I got it S/H in 1977. It was a Simca 1100 (No, me neither!). It's big attraction was that you could fit a 4x12 cabinet in the back of it! It was a very unreliable vehicle - but to be fair, it never had anything minor go wrong with it!

My 2nd car was the White Austin 1300 GT (with Black vinyl roof). This was quite a nippy little vehicle having twin carbs on what was basically a Mini engine. It was a much more reliable vehicle but towards the end of its life it was using as much oil as it did petrol.

My 3rd car (circa 1983) was a massive step up in reliability and comfort. It even had cloth seats! A VW Golf (Rabbit) 1500 GLS. This was a lovely car that served me well for many years.

Got my first car in 1989. It was a ‘77 Subaru DL station wagon. It was so rusted out it had no floors left. The seats were attached to wooden posts that were bolted to the frame. You had to mind your feet and keep them up, or they’d be on the pavement. Not good. I paid $75 for that car.

A couple months later I paid $100 for a ‘78 Subaru Brat with a blown engine. Took the engine out of the DL and put it in the brat. Drove that for a bit until I swerved to miss a dog in the road and rolled it repeatedly. The roll bar in the bed saved my life. And I also learned never to swerve to avoid an animal. I love dogs, but I’ll never do that again.

After that I paid $500 for a Ford Torino with a Starsky and Hutch paint job.

There was also a ‘72 Lincoln Continental Coupe, a ‘76 Firebird, and a ‘75 Ford Grenada 2 door with a 302. This was all in the first two years or so. The $500 Torino was the most expensive one. I don’t think any of the others cost more than $200.

When the Grenada died I got my dad to Co-sign a loan with me and bought a slightly used ‘89 Ranger pickup. It had about 15k miles on it. I drove that truck well over 300k miles with basically no maintenance or repairs. I bought used tires when it needed them, did the brakes a couple times, replaced the exhaust once, and changed the oil maybe a half dozen times. I miss that truck. When I let it go it still ran like it was brand new. But all of the suspension was totally shot, the brake system needed replacing in its entirely, and it had gotten so rusty in its first three Ohio winters that you could see through it. I had a two year old son by then and needed a safe vehicle. So away it went. I cried when they took it away. So many memories in the little truck...

In hindsight, the money they gave me for it was so little, it would not have affected the payment on the new car at all. I should have kept and eventually brought it back to life. I really wish I still had it. When they hauled it away it still had the original clutch in it and it worked 100% fine.

I've had so many cars over the years; lots of them pieces of junk.

My favorite would probably have been my '72 Plymouth Duster. That was a nice car.

Now a car is just something to get me from point A to point B. I want it to get decent mileage and not break down. That's about it.

I have owned a Toyota Cressida, three Honda Accords, a Volvo S60, a Volvo XC90, a Chrysler Town & Country, a VW Jetta Sportwagen, and my current car is a BMW 330i Sportwagen. I think that's all of them.

Also owned a Moto Guzzi V7 which was a beauty.

I don't have photos of them, but I think I can list them:

    1. 1968 VW Beetle, bought in 1978.
    2. 1979 Honda Civic CVCC, bought new in 1979.
    3. 1968 Toyota Landcruiser, bought in 1979 or 1980.
    4. 1981 Ford Econoline Van, bought new in 1981
    5. 1970 something Saab, bought in 1985. I forget the model number or the exact year, bought from a buddy of mine who was a Saab mechanic.

From this point on my wife's cars and mine get kind of interspersed because we both drove all of them a lot.

    6. 1984 (ish) Toyota Tercel, bought new in 1984 (ish)
    7. 1987 Honda Civic Hatchback, bought new in 1987.
    8. 1991 Nissan 240 SX, bought new in 1991
Edit - forgot that somewhere in here we bought a late ‘80s Nissan “Wally-Wagon” - I forget the model number.
    9. 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R, bought new in 1992
    10. 1995 Ford Windstar, bought new in 1998, terrible piece of crap for the couple years we owned it.
    11. 1998 Honda Odyssey Wagon (pre-minivan - all doors opened out), bought new in 1998
    12. 2003 Honda Accord, bought new in 2003.
    13. 2008 Honda Fit, bought new in 2008 - I'm still driving this.
    14. 2015 Honda Fit, bought new in 2015 - my wife is still driving this.

The first 12 are all long gone. The last two are likely gonna be with us a good long time. Hondas run forever and the Fits are perfect cars for us now in our dotage.

I had three cool cars, all Chevys, all stock, all owned before I was 25.
    I’ll look for pics soon.
    I had a 1956 4 dr. 210 model, blue & white two tone, 6 cyl, std. (3 on a tree) transmission.
My next was a 1963 Impala SS, white two door hard top.
Last, another almost identical 56 Chevy, my second one had a fresh repaint, and a Powerglide transmission.
    I was a lucky pup!

I got my drivers licence 1986 around March 1986. About a month later - but meant as a pre-birthday (which is in November) present - my parents bought a 1979 Mitsubishi Lancer. It was pretty much a wreck and only ran on 3 of 4 cylinder - but I learned how to actually drive in daily traffic with that thing.
Next was a Honda Civic, which in hindsight was one of the most reliable cars I ever owned.
Two and a half years with an '1972 Mercedes; a giant car with lots of flat surfaces inside the car to put stuff on (what idiot decided to make all surfaces round nowadays and leave like 3 miniature storage spaces for exactly a smartphone, a purse and two handkerchiefs???). We used to have huge meals from takeaways in that monster - I loved it, but it kind of slurped both petrol and oil like mad.
Than a second hand VW Golf, solid, but boring and apart from that in the colour "aubergine", which had all the woman in my life kind of question my sexual orientation....
Then a Daihatsu Sirion, ah, the Silver Surfer....I loved the car, small, but enough space to drag my then rack and 2x12 cab around. I went to pretty much all around Europe with it. Then one night around 3 in the morning I simply forgot those crazy way of the brits to drive on the left side and hit another car in a roundabout. The car survived for another 5 months, but....ah, still can't talk about it....
Then again a Daihatsu Sirion, because it proved to be reliable. That's my car since 2014.
All in all I think I was lucky with my cars.

My favorite was a 1985 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham that I bought in 1992. I'm fairly certain that I was the only 25-year-old on Earth who ever bought one, but it was perfect for long road trips in the Southwest because it was comfortable -- essentially a La-Z-Boy on wheels -- and there was plenty of room in it.

That thing had four cigarette lighters.
