I use a Fuzz Factory that I like a lot, but I'm curious as to whether something else might be just as satisfying while also addressing some issues.

Here's what I like about the FF:
- Stupid (good) gain range
- Fairly easy to tweak once you get used to the controls
- Different tunable sounds aside from more/less gain (compression, notes sputtering out, attack noise...)

Here's what I don't like about it
- Temperamental about not being first in the chain (even with a true bypass loop switcher that it's in one loop of, there's a difference compared to being plain first)
- Pretty much useless with volume/bass turned down (anything under "10" here turns it into a different sound altogether; all bright and brittle)
- Weak bass and no EQ tweaking (I've been using an EQ pedal in the loop with it; an improvement, but I'm not 100% satisfied)
- No real difference with different pickups on the same guitar

Also of potential importance here: This is all re. using the pedal into a pretty much clean amp; volume and (on guitars with a bass control) bass maxed = some slight crunch (chords) and cut (single notes).

I've been looking at the Carcosa. Good reviews including lots of happy users here. Available for ~$100 or less used. It has one mode dedicated to running into clean(ish) amps. The Before/After controls (particularly the After) seem capable of some of the weirder Fuzz Factory tones. The Hi Cut control is more EQ control than the FF has.

So what can I expect from the Carcosa when rolling back my volume/bass controls (the FF is pretty much useless here for me)? And how's the bass on it, considering I'd run it into a clean amp at somewhere between bedroom and garage volume? And how does it respond to, say, the neck pickup vs. the bridge pickup (I notice no real difference with the FF here, aside from some octave stuff). And I not the Carcosa, then what? The only other fuzz I've used is a Big Muff Nano, and that hasn't impressed me much.

I love the Carcosa.
Also, the guy who designed the Carcosa has his own company called Spiral Electric and his Demhe is his updated Carcosa. I like the external bias control and the blower switch. He also makes this in a germanium option.

If you like Carcosa you will love Tom Cram’s Demhe.

I’ve owned the Fat Fuzz Factory and the Carcosa. They’re pretty different from one another IMO.

The Carcosa will not get as saturated as the FF unless you hit it with a boost. It’s definitely tamer and sounds a bit more “vintage”. Hali mode offers more mids than you can get from the FF.

The Carcosa will clean up a bit with the guitar volume, but it sounds a bit dull IMO. Doesn’t retain the high end very well, and loses its punch.

Again, they’re both pretty different from one another, and having both makes sense to me, but don’t expect the Carcosa to be a replacement for the FF.

Good to know; saturation is definitely something I want to have available. I have an MXR Micro Amp I'm not currently using which might do as a boost before the Carcosa. An SD-1 and modded DS-1, as well.

I do like the idea of the preserved bass/more mids in Hali mode. That's more or less what I'm doing with the EQ after my FF (and to be clear, mine is the regular one, not the Fat).

A mid-forward boost (SD-1, TS) into the Carcosa sounds huge. Give it a whirl. It’s a relatively cheap pedal and there’s nothing quite like it.

The prospect excites me. I have three dirt "flavors" on a loop switcher including fuzz, and the other two have switching for lead and rhythm sounds, so something similar with fuzzz will feel like home.

If you're looking at used. Get it soon. Corey Congilio just made a very positive comment about it in Tone Quest Report.

Damn.
I get tempted... and then I remember how many fuzzes I actually already have AND (more importantly) that I already have a Blackout Effectors Musket fuzz that can do anything I want of a fuzz

Just ordered mine. Fingers crossed.

So I take it the Carcosa doesn't mind other pedals before it? My Fuzz Factory can be weird about that.
