Can't bring myself to buy a Joyo pedal, new or used

I wanted an inexpensive battery powered pedal to use in the house so I don't have to go to my pedal board when I want low volume dirt.

I see used Joyo pedals on CL and man are they the right price. Unfortunately, for me, there's nagging feeling from within.....what Joyo symbolizes.

To me, Joyo is a gear manifestation of Chinese intellectual property theft. Their whole business model is based on appropriating existing circuits and marketing them back to the west.

If I buy used, the company won't benefit directly but, I don't want someone to be encouraged by seeing it on my board when gigging.

I'll say no on Joyo out of principle. My pocketbook will allow me to take that stand.

The good news is I can still find affordable alternatives from US makers or trusted Asian brands like Boss, Maxon, and Ibanez.

Well ... that's good I guess. There are flaws in the general concept, mostly that everyone borrows from everyone when it comes to design.

Circuit designs can't be copyrighted and the patents, if there were any, have long since expired. There's no "theft" involved. You may as well be complaining that Seymour Duncan stole Gibson's pickup design or that booteek fuzz pedals are ripping off the 1960's originals.

The one that comes to mind is Joyo's American Dream which supposedly is a rip off of Suhr's Riot pedal.

I hate the fact Georgia Satellites stole Chuck Berry's "song" too.

    Don't then!

You'd be missing out on the American Sound which is superb sounding into mixing desks, PAs, acoustic amps and neutral amps.

Get over it. Half of all the the stuff out there is made in China, and it's made in China because American businessmen decided it was cheaper to do it that way. It's not going back.

You're living your principles. Good for you.

I won't eat at McDonalds, because back when they first brought out the Quarter-pounder, they never had any ready without cheese, even though they were on the menu. They just wanted that extra 15 cents for their 1/2 cent slice of orange solidified oil. Bastards.

I'm able to afford the better alternatives so no need to relent or get over it. I buy mostly USA gear because I can (mostly to keep the money within my country). TV and home electronics are another story (proof positive that Asian countries can make good stuff).

I am reminded of the Simpson's episode where their TV dies and they are out shopping for a new one. The always globally-conscious Lisa says they should buy a TV at "Rainforest Tech" (or some such name) because they give profits to help restore and preserve the environment.

Mom Marge's response is simple: "We don't have the money to shop at a store with a philosophy."

There are plenty of used pedals out there for 30-50. I'd say that's your market. Otherwise, you're stuck paying 'philosophy' prices.

Then don't buy one. Easy :)

As has been mentioned before, every design builds on some other older design, and on the collected body of knowledge. Where do you draw the line between that which is original and that which is derivative, when everything is derivative?

It's not just China, of course. For example, take Fender - a good ol' American company. Leo Fender based all of his original designs on earlier designs from Western Electric - see this link. And it seems Marshall then borrowed those Fender designs. And so it goes on, and on, and on, ...

This is like boycotting all microwave ovens because they are made in china.

Not really. There are no US made microwave ovens that I know of.
