The flip side to this argument is that folks get annoyed (I'm one of them) when someone adds a post to a thread that's multiple years (sometimes more than a decade) old. It's a balancing act. In this case I don't really see the harm in starting a new thread.
Fair point, but I believe the moderators added this feature for a reason:

I use the C, Rex in three of my amps. It sounds great but requires some break in time. I like the way it sounds. My style is jazz and jazzy R&B. YMMV. A great speaker at a good price.

I heard one which was a tad dark.but ok . I guess if I wanted to kill a overly bright amp I would go with that et65. Imho

Once broken in I think it’s a fine speaker. I only took it out of my PRRI to quiet the thing down.

The breakin is significant though.

All this talk about "break-in". I loved my CR right out of the box, it tamed the high end of the amp I was using (and no, it's not the same thing as "just turn down the treble"), which is what it's known for. Out of the box, it sounds like a broken-in speaker already, that's one of the reasons so many people love it. yes, it does break-in over time, but not drastically IMO.

People who hear it as "dark", "muffled" or "like a blanket over the amp" are either comparing it to a bright speaker (like a Jensen) or are suffering some high-end hearing loss that requires them to prefer bright speakers LOL.

It was such a dramatic difference I wonder if you somehow got a returned CR that someone had broken in and sent back. When I got my PRRI I was turning the treble up to 7 or 8 and after breakin I started turning it down to 4. Night and day.

I bought my 1st one brand new, it wasn't a return- I would have noticed wear on the frame where the screws fasten down. I also bought a 2nd one- used- and it's not as broken in as mine, it is a little brighter/tighter, but it's a subtle difference.

The only ones who likes bright tele bridge pickups full on through anything , is us old guys with shot hearing anyway
I own a C Rex , used in a Cab together with a Red Fang .....My son has loaned it for a decade or so......Sounds "meh" to me , when he uses it

I have a closed back 212 with a C. Rex and a Red White & Blues. A phenomenal sound with baritone or guitar. Only reason I could imagine changing speakers would be needing an 8Ω 212.

Hey folks,

I want to know what's your final verdict on the C rex speaker? For some amps it might not work yes it’s true but I don't think it's that dark at all. It's actually well balanced and versatile. I'm currently playing one through deluxe reverb and tele. So let's hear it!!

I have a 12" C Rex in a brown Vibrolux which is a pretty warm amp to begin with. I don't find it too dark but I'm also not a fan of the Tele ice pick phenomenon. I tried the Swamp Thang in it but thought the C Rex was a nicer sound. Even at low volume this combination sounds lovely to my ears.

I decided the 12" Swamp Thang in my blackface Princeton Reverb was a good combination as it's a little louder and more forward sounding which works well when playing with drums up to a certain volume indoors. I also put a Swamp Thang in my blackface Vibrolux Reverb although the C Rex sounded good in that too.

No matter the builder, IMO, cannabis cones are dark sounding and only hit their stride when used in a bright sounding amplifiers cabinet.. '60s Fender and / or Vox amps could work well will a cannabis coned speaker. Otherwise thet always sound muffled to my ears. The Cannabis Rex, Celestion Hempback, Tone Tubby's, etc. would fall in this group.

Red Fang is the polar opposite... Uber bright and chimney. Did they balance each other out to a nice mid-ground?

The frequency response curve if anyone interested:

(From Eminence site link)

One thing that may be of interest to those that think it may sound a tad 'dark'-- it's freq. range is listed as 80-4500k Hz.
Most 12" guitar speakers typically go up to about 5000hz. For some players, that added 4500-5000hz may be important.

I tend to shy away from normative terms about 'good' vs 'bad', 'bright' vs 'dark' etc as the result depends so much on the other parts of the chain.

I do tend to like speakers that have a flatter but extended range up to about 6k-7k.. depending on guitar, pickups, amp settings, etc

My playing is simply bright. Every amp I own has an icepick edge. I think it is my playing.

Enter the 12" C-Rex. Completely changed my Blues Deluxe RI. No more ice pick. It is a beautiful match in my BDRI. I've never been happier.

Break in though. Wow. Out of the box it was so dark it was muffled. I hooked it up to a PA and ran a Danny Gatton CD through it continuously at high volume for three days. The whole thing was covered in pillows and bedspreads down in the basement. After two days I could hear an increase in the highs. On day three the speaker started to bloom and only after the end of the third day did it begin to stabilize. That was 72 hours or more of continuous use at gig volume.

Was it the break-in hours? Or was it playing Danny Gatton through it for 72 hours? I'll never know for sure, but when I play, I don't sound like Gatton.
