First CD was Van Halen 1984.
I still remember when I was a kid, and my grandparents got a CD player that was as big as a VCR, & everyone gathering around & listening to "brothers in arms" ooing and aahing at the quality of the sound
Dire Straits' Brothers in Arms was my first CD, too. I wanted something I knew I'd like but didn't already have on LP or cassette, and I wanted my first CD to be one of those with the three D's that signified it was recorded, mixed, and mastered digitally (remember that?).
I think I bought Pink Floyd's The Wall shortly after that, because my vinyl copy was pretty worked from many, many playings. (There was a time in Jr. High when I would listen to one side of that album every day after school. Four sides in four days; then I'd start over again the next day. "Isn't this where..." "...we came in?" )
This and Learning to Crawl
+1 My parents gave it to me for my 13th Birthday.
Pet Sounds for the mono pressing and the bonus track, Hang on To Your Ego, I didn't have a CD player yet.
It must be like...25 years ago
The first CD-player I got was a Yamaha. Big as a briefcase. (well, almost.. )
SWEET 1st CD man
Love the Black Crowes
Your Father is a Good Man
Hold on, when was this ?
CD's are still $17.00 each, not so ?
Late 80s sometime when we spent a relative fortune on a new "Hi Fi" with CD player. Ricky Scaggs had just played his first concert in Ireland (we were there) so the first CD was Mr Scaggs.
I bought a Technics CD player with my hard earned money mowing grass on the golf course. I then went across the way to the mall and bought: Steve Winwood, Arc of a Diver and Genesis, Abacab. I am guessing this was the summer of '87 or '88. That CD player just gave up the ghost this year.
Do you remember those long boxes they used to package them in, so that they could fit in the stores' album racks?
1983 - Yep, saved all my mowing money and bought a Technics CD player from Radio Shack, was around $500! Still have it in the original box, probably still works?
Went to Papa Jazz's in Columbia, SC and bought 2 CDs out of the little shoebox of CDs they had. Only had maybe 10 had been produced.
#1: Bob Dylan Greatest Hits
#2: Eric Clapton Time Pieces
Although I've long ago ripped music collection into digital files, I still have those two CDs. Little pieces of history?
AC/DC Back in Black. Still have it, jewel case is all chewed up. The black is pretty faded, but the CD still plays without a problem.
Those three little Ds,... I'd forgotten about that designation!
Thanks for the memories...
First CD? I bought 3 at once: The soundtrack to Amadeus, The first 3 Brandenburg concertos and the 2nd 3 Brandenburg concertos.
But that was many many years after my first album which was probably Jimi Hendrix Elelctric Ladyland.
My first cd was the first Diamond Rio album. I still dig Jimmy Olander. Everything he plays is golden.
Some Mozart string quartets. Would have been about 1988, maybe '89.
