What is the BEST thing in the world? If you had to narrow it to ONE thing, it'd be impossible.

Vitamin C-one of the best things you can give yourself on a daily basis. Does that make it 'better' than calcium, vitamin D, protein, etc?

Best day of your life-every other day isn't good?

    So many examples

    How about:

    Lightest,
    Prettiest,
    Out of tune, etc.

Are you implying "best" means one or is singular? It may actually be used as a noun, verb, adverb or adjective. I do not believe the use is grammatically incorrect.

Yes, excellent answer. I looked it up as well and uses include meaning collective, as in "among an elite grouping, i.e the 'best.'"

Now, and pardon the pun, that may not be the one of the best uses for the term or phrase, but is listed as one.

that was a fun brain teaser!

Exactly. I wonder if Texan's dad would have a problem with the phrase "one of the ten best" etc.

There is that rarely observed rule that says you should use "better" instead of "best" when comparing two things (as in "this is the better of my two guitars") and reserve "best" for when you're referring to a group of things (as in "this guitar is the best of the six I own"). Maybe that's a source of this idea that you can't say "one of the best" -- except changing it to "one of the better" seems to run counter to the rule that you use "better" when comparing only two things. If you're only comparing two things, there's no point in saying "one of."

I guess there's some logic to the assertion that there can only be one "best" thing -- everything else in any group, no matter how good, is not as good as the best thing. But if you go by that strict logic, then any reference to "the 10 best" anything -- or "the 20 worst" whatever -- is also grammatically incorrect.

I think it's a case where constructions like "10 best" and "one of the best" have become so common and so well understood that they are effectively grammatically correct. I don't always care for the way grammar or words that were once incorrect become accepted just because they've been widely misused for a long time...but I've got no problem with this one.

Don't get me started on "I could care less," though!

I like that expression as nothing is really ever the best....it's the best till you find a better one...LOL

Your examples are different than the question at hand. You're referencing "comparative" use of "best", we're discussing "collective" use of "best".

I think the First Bassman has one of the best answers... and the one that I favor.

"One of the best..." is correct IF it is implying or elliptically referring to different guitar types, e.g. in this case,"One of the best" was referring specifically to a particular Tele and it WAS the best Tele style the speaker had ever played, but that the speaker is also one who has OTHER styles/types of guitars that s/he has played that are EACH the best in THEIR categories.

Otherwise (and ordinarily), the word best is a "pure" superlative, and can only refer to a single outstanding or exemplary thing.

I suppose it'd be safer to say, "I've never played a better guitar!"

You're right. This from a cite called grammar.ccc, but more importantly, citing the Oxford American Dictionary.

So why don't you just say it's "one of your favorites?"

    Oh, right.

To me 'one of the best' means 'among the best' In which case there can be multiple. Interpreting language can go on forever so I find it best to just make up your own interpretation and stick to it.

    Well,

I think Texas IS the best state to live in, while others might think it's just "one of the best" states...

But who's to say I'm wrong here?

    Wow.

I've never thought of myself as the First Bassman.

    But I guess so. Cool.
