Can a pickup go " bad " ?

    I should have thought of this. Saw it all the time on equipment where switches might go years without getting used.

    Just use old fashion contact cleaner on those contacts? Or should I expect to use a pint of elbow grease...

    Keep steel wool FAR away from your guitar. There are better abrasives that aren't conductive.

    When I worked in a guitar repair shop in the mid-1980s I had a customer come in with a Strat that had individual strings that weren't being picked up by two of the pickups. Turns out he had used a Dremel to engrave his initials into the pickguard without removing the pickups first, and the Dremel demagnetized some of the slugs. I guess it's a little off topic, but I think worth mentioning in a thread about pickup problems.
