Can you even imagine the hell-on-earth it must be like to drive thru that in escape mode,...for miles?
    The stress. Unreal.

In 1974, I spent about 6 months living in Malibu, right on the Coast Highway, just a couple miles further out than Pepperdine University. I wonder if that house is still there anymore.

The roads melting under your tires. Can't see. In a hurry, but can't go to fast to be fast enough.
    Prayers!

We’ve been watching it on the news down here. Just a terrible situation and our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected.

Neil Young is one of those who lost a home in Malibu.

I only mention that in the context of this guitar forum - the real tragedy lies with the lives lost.

Indeed. I've watched some of these escape video that you're referencing. One was at 9am... and it was basically pitch black as night... with fire beginning to consume the road. As I watched it, I thought "What if that we me and my family in that car, leaving our home that we built, knowing that it was going to be destroyed, and as we're trying to escape there are no guarantees that we're actually going to make it out."

    Frightening.

With over 200 folks missing, they are beginning to find them in burnt out cars.

Yes I believe many of the missing folks got caught in escape routes that just closed down around them.

    Exactly.

So, please, people, learn a half dozen discrete routes of evacuation and pound them into your memory. Don't rely on that Navigation system in your car or on your phone because, frankly, too many others will be doing the exact same thing. Think like Chuck Yeager and develop plans A, B, C, D and carry a quality analog compass in your car and keep that vehicle gassed up and read to roll. It could be a Tornado, could be river flooding, mudflows, or a Hurricane. Or it could be a fire like this.

You may love your cul de sac where the people passing by on the Interstate can't find your street, or you may like that power line right of way behind you or canal, but you must have multiple means of getting out of where you are - or you're making a terrible mistake.

You tell me you've spent $ 25,000 on tree removal in the last 12 months, and you need to spend $ 25,000 next year but you haven't the money. And if so, maybe you've got to think about moving out of California or to a less glamorous part of your state.
