Apparently various places in Cali are being hit with a huge storm right now. There have been tornado warnings for LA, but I believe that's past and it's now in Orange County area, but moving still. I saw something about a lot of flooding too, schools being locked down, etc.

I hope this passes by without too much damage, be safe everyone in the area!

Usually late December through February are when we get a little weather. Because of the fires there are some dangers of landslides etc.. but, I think we'll come out okay. We are supposed to get 10 in. of rain this week here which is a whole bunch...but we are so desperate for it, I'd be the last to complain. (can't fight the weather anyhoo)

It will seem out of the ordinary and it is heavier than usual (maybe) but, it is just part of the year... there'll be some power outages etc..

Thanks for the update, that is a great perspective! Of course, much to my own dismay, I had been following twitter updates which range from "OMG the world is truly ending" to various aloof comments about the potential twister. So many people were posting that it's never happened, but a quick google search said that there have been at least 30 reported tornadoes in CA since 1918. I'm sure it's a rare occurence, but not THE FIRST time ever.

I gotta stay off Twitter. Glad you seem to be holding up...best of luck weathering the rest of the storm!

I'm visiting my folks here in Irvine (I live in rainy Washington), and just now went out the door muttering "these wussy Californians are probably all holed up--I'm heading for Costco"...

I drove through the 2nd strongest rain I've ever experience in my life, the first being a bender on a crab boat in Alaska...

It was amazing....

Hope everybody's doin' OK up in the burned out foothills, 'cause it was really comin' down...

A guy here in town was gonna take his car in for some minor body work Monday but the storm hit blew down a tree and crushed his top all the way down to the doors so its gonna need lots of work now.

On a more serious note up in Pine Mt a tree fell on a house and killed a 21 yr old guy that just had his birthday the day before.

7000 people were without power yesterday here in Bakersfield.

We only got 3" or rain all last year and so far this year we have already gotten more than that I think.

Got on a board a west bound 747
Didn't think before deciding what to do
All that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true.
Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don't they warn ya
It pours man it pours.
Out of work, I'm out of my head
Out of self respect I'm out of bread
I'm under loved I'm under fed
I wanna go home
It never rains in California
But girl don't they warn ya, it pours, man it pours.
Will you tell the folks back home I nearly made it
Had offers but don't know which one to take
Please don't tell them how you found me
Don't tell them how you found me give me a break
Give me a break
Seems it never rains in Southern California
Seems I've often heard that kind of talk before
It never rains in California
But girl, don't they warn ya
It pours man it pours

It's just rain. I'm thankful for that, considering the earthquakes, brush fires, mudslides, flooded creeks, broken water mains, etc. We're very lucky.

I'm camped out and hiding under a big barn at the fairgrounds in Blythe, CA right now, and the wind is blowing about 30 MPH and the rain is just coming down.
I should be heading down to Yuma, for a show this weekend, but I just don't want to drive in this.

Everything had already been pretty green, at least from a superficial standpoint, so hopefully mud slides and soil erosion will not be as dramatic as it otherwise can be when wet weather comes all at once.

Last week I took a quick stab at fixing my sister's flat roof in Los Angeles, but I was given neither the daylight nor the tools and materials I requested. It leaked today, but I suspect way less than if I hadn't gotten up there at all.

This happens a lot, it seems. I leave CA and with days there's the Northridge Quake, or the terrible fires of June-July 2008 or the race riots, or mudslides or something. But only the next week or 2 after I leave. ??

I was there 12/30 to 1/11 I think. Weather was immaculate, pleasant and warm. Ya'll need to take up a collection next time, and make me stay. ;)

Or a collection to keep me away?:eek:

Sincere best wishes for our neighbors to the south. The weather's often a little damp this time of year where I live, but very seldom is it the least bit exciting. Hope you all come away from this one just a little soggy and with no real damage.

I really like the big rainstorms. I find them very exciting. I want to say, "but I hate driving in them," but I think I kind of get a kick out of that, too.

Once, about fifteen years ago, I was driving down Sunset Blvd. in a big storm, and the road going through Laure Canyon was partially blocked off with cones. I wasn't sure if it was truly closed, so I turned anyway. When I got near the crest at Mulholland Drive, the road turned into a river, with debris floating by. I felt like I was going upriver in "Apocalypse Now."

Of course, if I suffered any real damage, I'd be singing a different tune.

Which reminds me... A year or two ago, my wife was unloading groceries from the mini-van on a stormy day when she noticed the dog across the street had gotten out of its yard. She went to put it back and lightning hit right where she had been standing. It even left a mark on the pavement. Today, she had jury duty downtown and lightning struck a lamp pole right outside the building. Hmm... better keep my distance.

I'm in the east bay area, we've been getting tons of rain, hail, thunder, lightning... we really do need the rain though. I just don't like the idea of my fiance driving out there in the rain and crazy drivers.

Well, I actually grew up in upstate New York. I am no weatherwuss. But today the groundpounding rain was impressive. It came down as hard as I have ever seen it in my life. Throw in a some wind and it was just nasty. I work in Orange County at a large hospital. Sometime around noon all of our pagers went off telling us to stay inside and not go out. The rapid response teams were called into play. Two hours later, sunshine. But the worst is yet to come.

The county seemed to be prepared in many ways. Sand bags where needed, storm drains clean. I know there were some problem areas, specially with flying catamarans and stuff, but all in all, we did well.

Drove to SF this AM in sheets of rain, and spray coming off the cars and trucks from water on the freeway.

Cleared up later - beautiful sky in The City this PM.

River up near our house.

El Nino time the pundits are punditing.

Rain means snow in the Sierra, and snow means water for the cities and agriculture. We need rain.

Tornadoes in 'Berdoo.....hmmmmmm.....
