Some may recall a recent post I made about the really awful day my kids had 2 Fridays ago. The day started with my daughter calling to tell us her car was totaled on the way to work in a 6-car collision. Wasn't her fault, and nobody was hurt. :)

That afternoon my son tells me that a very close friend died in his sleep at 26 years of age. There was an underlying condition, not drugs or suicide.

Today, my venue hosted the funeral. I am deflated, as this is my 3rd high profile public servant funeral in 7 years and hope to retire before the next one comes along. These things are very difficult to do tech for, and emotions can take over. Sam was a good kid. He served as an Astoria, OR police officer, a Gearhart Oregon firefighter, and a member of the Sheriff's SAR team all at the same time. He left behind a wife & 2 preschool kids. There were about 800 in attendance & another 450-ish viewing the livestream.

Rest in peace, Officer Whisler. You are already missed.

I am going to drive the coast tomorrow to decompress with plans to visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium, and maybe let the one-armed bandits help me make donations to the tribe.

It is never easy, a friend of mine woke up coughing one day and a few hours at work he was still hacking...then he collapsed and was pronounced dead at the hospital from sudden heart failure. He was an officer, volunteer fireman, Army Vet, and a good friend raising 3 kids on his own. Bad things can and often happens in the blink of an eye and he too was only 31.

I sometimes fear that we will one day run out of the good people, but we have to just keep pushing forward.

The only comfort I ever find is reminding myself that we never forget the good ones. My friend died 12 years ago and here I am telling you guys about him. The good ones get under our skin and leave behind parts of themselves in our mind and hearts...they never fully die.

Sorry for what you feel today, it gets better, but it does take time.

I have worked with Oregon Fallen Badge Foundation in the past. This group assists families & agencies when they lose a member. Unless you have been close to one of these episodes, you will never know how losing an officer affects a community, especially if they fell in the line, or if it happens in a small town. This time, even the tourists were a bit freaked out when they got up and there were 200 police cruisers from around the state & most of the streets were closed downtown.

I would state, with emphasis, that if one were looking for an organization to support, my suggestion would be to seek out an organization such as Fallen Badge in your state. These people do a very difficult task with dignity & honor.

Thank you to all for your extended kindness. Yes, the job is emotionally draining, but it's not about me. My personal therapy includes writing things out, and the TDPRI membership is exceedingly kind for accommodating this. Thank you all for that.
