They also had a lot less traffic to deal with, and so more-open streets to chase on. It's not really apples-apples.
Have you been to SF at all recently? There just isn't room on those streets these days.

They're going to have to do an e-bike chase if it's in SF. That might be fun...

    Sure.

Also, Californians in those days were remarkably precise in their driving, I found. Not quite the Blue Angels but pretty impressive. Now, the attention paid by the typical CA driver is inadequate and what attention they do pay goes heavily to crosswalks and pedestrians. Because the enforcement is about those pedestrians. For better or for worse, the love affair with the automobile is on the ropes in the USA and it is most in peril, in heavily urbanized areas .

I think of how fast my baby sister used up brake pads on her VW, living in and driving across SF to work in Oakland every day. We're kinda up against our limits.

It has been discussed here before, and many wondered what transmission it was from the 1960s that had that many apparent gears to shift.

Lethal Weapon 2 and Ronin both had pretty good chase scenes.

I love the LandrumC goes there channel. Last September he released this video talking all about how the Bullitt car disappeared for 45 years and then was rediscovered. For awhile it was owned by a couple in Madison New Jersey who used it as their daily driver.

This is a wonderful video... Enjoy!

I only wish that were true. I'm in OC and I don't care to count the number of times that people have have had to jam on the brakes in the middle of the intersection because they didn't bother to check and saw me crossing only after they were in the midst of turning. With WFH I'm doing a lot more walking than I used to, to get out of the house for a bit but also because I just don't need to drive as much.
    It's bad.
CA driving is what you get when you make a curry of all the various bad driving habits from around the country and world, season with some phone distraction, let it simmer in a pressure cooker for 70 years.

It's an amazing story, and I'm glad they stuck to their guns when McQueen tried to buy it. Much as I love his movies and the public persona, the man himself was an absolute cad and it's nice that money can't actually buy everything*

    Great read too: https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a19457341/original-steve-mcqueen-bullitt-mustang-rediscovered/

*Having said that I would've sold in a heartbeat ;)

One of the reasons the green Volkswagen keeps showing up is its actually the same scene but shot from different cameras..

The Bullitt chase scene still gives me chills.
"Ronin", with Robert DeNiro, has a good chase scene in it also.
Of course, The Blues Brothers movie's chase scene is in a class by itself.

If you like car chases, you need to watch the original version of Gone in 60 Seconds. The movie sucks (super low budget) but the car chase lasts about 45 minutes, half the movie.

Good call on the Bourne Mini Cooper chase; that was well done. Some of those motorcycle cops were on some Euro version of the US-market Honda ST1100, if I recall. Or vice versa.

Interesting to see cops on something other than big Kawasaki fours or Harleys.

What about “Killer Elite?” There’s a decent chase in that, between a Jaguar sedan and what I think is maybe a Ford Cortina? It looks like a 2/3-scale late 60s Galaxie/Fairlane hybrid to me, and makes a V6 sound that is either realistically overdubbed or is for real. Despite neither being very fast, it does appear the drivers are pushing them hard in traffic, so it comes off as pretty exciting.

Came here to mention the Blues Brothers and its "body count." Definitely a Mount Rushmore car chase.

And you might notice with many car chase scenes, if the hapless rubes hadn't had the sense to get out of the way these chases might have ended much sooner. Sure a high level of fictional skill but it's versus just sheer luck often.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy a good car chase .

I want to say it's Burglar (1987) that has a pretty good chase in a cop car down that same hill, but I can't be 100% sure.
