Yes. IMHO innocent little terms like "gain" and "volume" cause some confusion. (Tho not as bad as volume - headroom - clean headroom, I guess.)

My first $50 amp had a Gain and a Volume knob, so I got the idea gain meant 'more dirt, same volume' -- but of course that's not how it actually works.

If the game is to reduce volume, maintaining tone, then you can try our design on the Marshall forum:

Simple Attenuators - Design And Testing | MarshallForum.com

its 85 pages, but just look at the first post and the diagram M2 at the top. You can build this for $100 and it will maintain your clean or overdriven tone, with no change, at any volume you need. This has been demonstrated through dozens of builds and by testing and analysis. Its a unique but quite simple circuit, developed based on study of various load and attenuator designs and addressing the issues that they have through engineering.

In saying there is no tonal change, what that means is that if you record a full unattenuated riff, and then the identical looped riff at any attenuated volume and normalize the volume levels, then you cant hear any difference, even at very low settings, and this is confirmed by measured frequency response.

Yeah, the 5F2a is a little cheaper to build.
