My lovely woman friend invited me to go see the show along with her very odd buddy Ron and another nice woman, Jean. We had GA lawn seats at a 27,000 head venue.
We got there, got in line, and when they went to scan the tickets it turned out we only had Lightening Passes. These passes cost $30 , they weren't tickets; they allowed lawn seats holders to enter the lawn 5 minutes before showtime so you could get better spots on the grass. Not off to a good start so off to customer services we went. Long story short, they were able to see that we indeed never purchased actual tickets and in light of that, we were comped 4 tickets in section 1, the VIP section!!! Go figure but what a wonderful surprise.
Other than spending time with my lady friend, Don Felder is what drew my immediate interest and he didn't disappoint. He played 1 new song and the rest of his 50 minute set was Eagles classics. He was excellent, one of the best acts I've seen.
Kevin from REO had 2 other 30 yr members of the band with him but I forget their names. I only knew 6 of the songs but they rocked them. I was very impressed. Kevin played no less than 4 different Ovation acoustics.
Styx played almost 2 hours and started with the "Grand Illusion" in its entirety. I'm not really a fan of the band but "GI" was among my 1st round of cassettes from Columbia House and I played that cassette until it wore out. That was a nice surprise. Then they played all of the hits less "Suite Madame Blue". Luckily, Tommy Shaw, who I really like, was on our side of the stage. Dennis DeYoung got far too much attention on the big screens but I guess he's the defacto leader.
The tickets, if you actually bought them, for lawn seats were only $28. The VIP seats were $95 and I'd have left happy if I would have paid for the comped seat. It was a good show.
Edited to add: For those of you that don't already know, I'm a knucklehead. DeYoung was no where to be seen, James Young did keys and vocals. Figured I'd add this here rather than retyping the night.
