I'm planning on making a bridge pickup for my trusty squire tele to match the neck one in terms of output. This I also made and wound it using 44AWG wire to a dc resistance of 20K.

For the lead unit I'm planning on using 43AWG wire wound to between 10.5 - 12K with a steel baseplate to enhance lower frequencies and give the pickup a fuller sound.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to which metal is best for this and how much difference the magnetism makes?

The effect of the copperplated plated is widely overrateted. It doesnt influcence the inductance so much that i will be audible, but it helps to shield the pickup.
