I ordered my Brent Mason in Aug of 2020. I received the guitar on June 18th 2021. It weighs 8.5 Lbs. My first impressions were good, even though I personally would have preferred one with the middle pickup that had a Seymour Duncan “logo” on it like the one that is in the pics on the Fender website. Now I actually probably would not have been to upset if the pickup actually worked! When you turn up the middle control pot nothing happens until about the last 5% of the pot, then when you turn it full up the pickup actually gets quieter. I hookup my multimeter and it reads 15k full off, and 4K full on. Now when it is full on at 4K and start to roll down the pot, with just barely rotating the pot, it jumps back to 15k right away, no taper at all. So I called the dealer where I purchased the guitar and to my surprise they already knew why I was calling. It is a known bad middle control pot. It turns out that they had just replaced the same pot in a “masterbuilt” one a few days earlier!! Now mine is bad enough, but did Fender really sell a $13,000 master built guitar without actually making sure that everything actually worked? Is anyone else having the same issue? Hard to believe. And as of today, the 23rd of June, Fender does not have the correct replacement. Any one else having this issue? Turns out the guitar that was 2 serial numbers ahead of my does not have this issue.

Yup, it sucks when it happens to you, but show me something that is 100% perfect, 100% of the time.

For mass produced items, I'd agree. A $13,000 price tag, though, ought to include five minutes of a tech's time making sure that everything works before it leaves the factory.

Maybe they knew. Maybe they didn't want to hold up your delivery another 6-8 months until they could get some pots that worked. Any idea what is so special about the pots?

Lol. That’s your definition of quality control? It’s not too much to ask that a guitar go through a thorough functioning check before it leaves the factory.

That goes triple for a known problem.

Here are a few pics of the control pot. It has the number “2103” on it. From a bit of research it looks like that would be a 500k pot. Item number 3477 at Stew Mac. I have one of those. I will update again after I install the pot in the morning.

Bummer! I'm guessing you didn't get it from Sweetwater (their 55 point inspection would have caught the defective pot). Hopefully getting the pot replaced under warranty won't take another ten months before you have a fully functional BM Tele.

I have read that CTS can custom make pots the way an assembler or reseller of parts wants them.... the taper, the turning resistance are two variables that come to mind.

So the ones that Fender uses may not be exactly like the ones that come from StewMac.

I agree with you on all of the above. I am definitely taking a chance, I am not even sure of the shaft length.

I did not get it from Sweetwater. The dealer said that I could send it back to them for the repair, or Fender will just send the pot directly to me, when they are in stock.

I personally have never heard of Brent Mason, but if his name is on your guitar maybe he should go to your house and fix the damn thing himself.

Did I say that was my definition of quality control? Did I say it was OK that this happened? What post are you responding to, because it wasn’t mine or anything I said.

I don’t disagree. I’m not saying it’s OK, I’m just pointing out the fact that nothing is 100% perfect 100% of the time.
