An odd spin-off from @EllroyJames "Sly and the Family Stone" thread. "Just like a Baby" was posted that instantly took me back to the 60s and thought of, "Cry Like a Baby" by the Box Tops. Of course then I started the YouTube domino effect into other Box Tops' songs, so I'll start here:

The first time I heard them I was in a diner in St. Louis.
My uncle and I were there for one of his Army conventions and I was out walking around seeing the sights and stopped in this diner for a cheeseburger. The Letter was on the juke box and it was different, so I liked it. Every time I hear it I’m taken back to that diner in St. Louis.

I'm still surprised at the amount of groove in their playing. Some of their songs sound like they have a big dose of Memphis R&B in them.

I moved to Memphis in 1969 fresh out of high school. Alex use to come by a druggy friend of mine's house in Memphis from time to time. Crazy times back then. I had met Sherrill Parks from Grenada Mississippi in 1968 who was a member of Cymarron band and a friend of Alex's. Cymarron had a top 20 hit with Ring, Ring

Their was so much good music going on in Memphis, the High Cotton club was a hotbed for a myriad of players. Steve Cropper for one. Had a friend that was the engineer at TMI in Memphis when Jeff Beck recorded the Jeff Beck Group there, tried my best to get in studio but couldn't, did get to met Bobby Tench in BMI parking lot and I dug Bobby's vocals with Beck.

There is a story that Alex, when he was in BS, tried to sing the way he did
just a few years earlier ala " The Letter " & he was unable to do so.
