We've been cleaning out my garage, including boxes of who knows what that came out of my dad's basement when he died. Today we found a box of letters written by his older brother (my uncle), an Army pilot who served in both the Pacific and Europe, and died when his plane went down over France not long before D-Day. One of my uncle's friends told me he was Chuck Yeager's flight instructor. I've seen records showing he was Yeager's commanding officer when they were stationed in England. I'm wondering whether it's worth going through these 4 years of letters to see if he mentions Yeager. Or if I should just send them to a military historian who's written about my uncle's squadron. Either way, this is a really cool find!
