It's my understanding that Boss started using SMT on certain pedals in 2017. Did they ever start this on the SD-1? How would you spot it without taking the bottom plate off?

I modded my beloved SD-1 with the C6 mod years ago and would love to pickup another and do the same thing.

Yeah, the SD-1 went SMT. I think the power jack is located in two different places on the two versions of the pedal. There is also the newer looking sticker on the bottom plate (a bar code or something) that the through-hole does not have.

I could be wrong on both of these, but I think those are two ways to tell.

A real guitar player must have the one that isn't available any more.

Even so, you can still remove C6 on an SMT assembly if you want to. The boards are still silk screened, you just gotta find the little bugger and use solder wick to remove it.

That's the reality of either construction method. Find the littler effer and nuke it, and y'er good.

I don't think that mod is necessary any more on newer SD-1's. A poster said a while back that the distortion bleed problem was fixed at some point by Boss. Does anyone know if this is true?.

Is there a backstory to this?

Current SMD based SD-1 (packed in a black box) is in production since September 2018 AFAIK.
You'll need to take the bottom plate off to properly identify it. Alternatively you can use the serial number and judge by the production date. Please check my post and stinkfoot page for more details.
My SD-1 was made in 1986 and I'm happy with it. But if I need one more I'd get me a pre-2018 version in "new" condition for $40 or even less and instead of cutting off the C6 (0.01uF) I'd substitute it with a 51pF cap. Hope this helps.

It assures circuit stability at the high frequencies by increasing the negative feedback. Pretty standard approach for opamp based circuits.

Got an sd-1 a while back, thought I would do c6 mod.
When I opened it up and saw that it was smt and how tiny the components are; decided to leave well enough alone.
It works great right out of the box;)

Switching to the new PCB layout for the SMD components should have fixed the bypass bleed. The layout of the old thru-hole PCB was responsible for the bleed, so there was no way for Boss to fix it, other than changing the layout. So the new SMD PCB should have finally taken care of that issue.

The new SMD version of the SD-1 (with updated input and output impedance values) sounds great stock. It’s bright and lively - I wouldn’t bother modding it even if I could.

Couldn't they have just incorporated the mod in the new pedals?. I thought it was fixed before the SMT changeover, but the info I got was a bit confusing.

i already modded my input impedance from 470k to 1MO. so if i also update the output impedance from 10kO to 1kO then its up to specs with the new SMD ones. any other changes circuit-wise?
    thanks
