Getting the urge to try something new from Bootstrap.I really can't tell from the descriptions what suits. I tried emailing them weeks ago, but no reply.

Want a set of strat PUs, not glassy brittle, but full and gutsy without being overwound to the point where things turn to mush and lose articulation.

???

They didn't answer because they are so busy. They ought to but don't. That being said, I believe their pickups are fantastic. The Vintage Sparkle is what I use because I wanted clean, sparkly, glass sounding pickups. So you don't want these or the other Vintage Pro's.

Process of elimination works! Thanks.

From looking at the specs, Sun City seem like a good fit. I haven't used them, but maybe somebody who has will chime in.

I would personally go with the Sun City Selects in this case
Wow, from the horse's mouth! Thanks.

"jangle and quack" don't come to mind when I am thinking about "Full and Gutsy". Really want that grab you by the balls neck PU sound. How do they compare to oatmeals? A bit extra from the bridge is OK.

The OS set is slightly warmer and slightly higher output than the SCS set.

The VS and VP sets are traditional bright single coil S-style sets; the SCS and OS are moderately higher output but still usable as traditional S-style tone; the Imp Stout and especially Prunos are getting more towards heavier P90ish tone and output. The Golden Ales are a mix of bright single coils in the middle and neck, and a moderately higher output in the bridge.

In your case I would stick to SCS, OS, or Imp Stout, ultimately depending on how hot you want the pickups. If you want the neck loud and with some treble filtered out and more mids and bass, then I'd go with the Imp Stouts. If you want traditional single coil s-style tone but a bit overwound and a bit hotter than a standard s-style set, I'd go with the SCS or OS.

Thanks! It's between the Oaties and the SC.

Did you make your decision yet? If not, I think the Sun City are a great middle ground to fill out the mids without straying too far from Strattiness. The Oatmeals are great for rock or if you really want to push the mids. They're cool, but not as versatile and less quack in 2 and 4.

Ryan's pickups are cheap enough that it's affordable to experiment and mix/match, too. I have one Strat with Sun City neck & middle and Oatmeal bridge. My other one has Vintage Pro neck, Sun City middle & bridge.

I ordered both. I have several strats.

Another hijack of this thread but it appears that the middle and neck pickup are the same wind? That's pretty cool considering that would cover neck pickup for two of my Tele's I planned on putting neck pickups in

Looks that way, except middle is generally reverse polarity unless you custom order it otherwise. I use a Vintage Pro middle in the neck spot (and the bridge pickup in the middle) of my Nashville so I can have hum cancelling in the neck/bridge position.

They are darn good pickups. I've tried a bunch of sets from some of the best known Strat pickup makers and Ryan's are just as good. You can buy three sets to try and mix/match and you've only spent half the cost of one set of a fancy brand.
