So as above it's a perennial bad award, but this year they have it right, truly something to be respected because at least she alone wrote the song.

Look I love Bonnie, have seen her live, will see her again later this year. But she didn't write either "Thing Called Love" or "Something to Talk About"* without which it's hard to imagine her current career.

Willie didn't write "Blue Eyes Cryin'" and Patsy didn't write "Crazy." Authorship by the performer doesn't make a song any better, and I notice that defense is usually absent from Taylor Swift discussions here.

*Or Angel from Montgomery, Love Me Like a Man, I Can't Make You Love Me, et al
All true but Song of the year is for songwriters, Bonnie won for writing it not for her performance. Record of the year is for performance.

But do

That's true, very good point (it can be just lyrics also). Of course, very few 'composers' have won that award in the modern era, the performer has at least had a credit on everyone in the modern era.

And like writer vs performer, don't think a song by committee is any better or worse than one penned individually; there is no way "Rehab" sounded like Ronson + Dap Kings from Amy's conception of it, and no way it wins best song without that production.

And I don't think Bonnie's song would've won this one if anyone else had recorded it. This was a "she's in her 70s, she's due and we like her" award.

I was absolutely thrilled to see her honored like this. I’ve met her and played with her first ever guitar player TJ Tindal here in Philly. Bonnie is the real deal of a great songwriter and consummate performer.
She was entirely taken by surprise and was so humble it was like a breath of fresh air.
I must say I was extremely disappointed to not see and rock entries other than Maneskin alone. I thought I’d see Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp’s hit record at least mentioned in new artist or new song category.
Hats off to Bonnie. She’s one of the best.
Go see her show. She kicks it.

Play on brother.
Saw her last summer it was great. Mavis Staples opened for her and killed it too!

I've seen her a couple times many years back.
Her voice gives me chills

I opened, and did sound, for Rory back in '84.

She was impressive, musically.

Although, she was a bit "edgy", personally.

She had some problems the night before (2 nighter) with another soundman.

The club owner knew me and asked me to come, open, and do the sound for her, and smooth things out.

It worked out OK.

I really liked her guitar-work... but vocally, she's not Bonnie Raitt.

imo.

Did you see the number of songwriters listed for Beyoncés song? It must have been in the double digits. Madness.

Cheers,
Geoff
I wonder how many are written by AI now? Seems logical after Autotune. But I suppose writing by committee must come first.

I have a signed copy of this CD.

Not from when I opened/met her.

Friends' saw her in MNLPS, later, and got it for me.

It is very good!

God bless Bonnie!
I only saw her once, touring to support Nick Of Time.
It was early in the tour, at the late great Austin Opry House, and the album hadn’t broke yet.
It was the first and only time I paid a scalper.
$50 bucks, for both tickets.:)
She and her band were superlative.

May I just say, I was and am really touched by her song. And it's been a while since that happened to me in more recent music.

I know, music is no competition and very much only comes down to taste, circumstances in life etc. , but I think, she absolutely deserved the Grammy no less than any other of the songs which were nominated. That has nothing to do with her career, let alone age, in my opinion, it is just a very fine song.
And the way she sang it, I cannot imagine anyone else tranpsorting the song the way she did. So, even if the song may sound like a generic songwriter's 101 at first, I think, it's a gem. A big story told with few words, perfectly sung with no over emotionalising or whatever, just with the perfect touch to make the story believable, relatable and touching without being kitsch. That is a very hard thing to achieve imho.

YMMV

That statement works for pretty much every song that's one the award.
At least in Bonnie's case she alone actually wrote the song, she didn't need a team of writers to win like last years did. The last sole songwriter to win was Amy Winehouse in 2008 for Rehab
I'm not sure why any of this matters. There's no category for "sole" songwriters, and I don't see anything about writing alone that's inherently better than co-writing.

Lennon/McCartney
George & Ira Gershwin
Page/Plant
Jagger/Richards
Rodgers/Hammerstein
Petty/Campbell
Elton/Bernie
Gilmour/Waters
Leiber/Stoller
Bono/Edge

And on and on and on. I guess all these folks' songs should be dismissed because they didn't write them alone?

Funny, if you live long enough... kind of thing.... I remember when Bonnie won for 'Nick of Time' and I thought, 'well, it is a pop song, but she wrote it, which she doesn't write all of her material, so, good for her. I thought it was a win at the tail end of her career being played on the radio (being commonly popular.)

She had some good records after that, but other than soundtracks etc... I kind of figured she'd be a blues artist on the track playing the old songs and being great but not in the spotlight anymore.

Lately, I've been hooked on Tedeschi Trucks and marveling at how Susan has become the heir to Bonnie and how nice that is (and what great music)

We didn't watch the Grammies but I saw on the news that she won. I haven't heard the song she won for. It isn't a matter of Bonnie not being relevant, it is the realization that I am no longer relevant.

I noticed that I have an amazon music app on my phone yesterday. I never use it. I launched it before I left for the office and clicked in the library and let it play... Man, such cool and crazy stuff in there I bought over the years of playing in a band and backing a ton of other artists... stuff I had to learn on the way to the gig... old cowboy songs, soul songs... the coolest artists (and who I will listen to today on the way in) The Bears Rise and Shine record (OH MY GOD) and Jackson Jackson (Low Ceilings and HIgh Tides) OH MAN!

I am celebrating my obscurity and lack of relevance and bonnie's. When I was a kid, it was fun to 'find' a band that nobody knew and turn them on to it and see it get popular... now, we get to see bonnie be that person this late in a great career... it isn't new, right? Van Lear Rose... Dolly... old chicks have a market baby!

That is what you took away from that statement?? I simply read it that it must be harder to write a good song solo as opposed to a team - which I would have to agree with.

A shocker really, and wonderful. Bonnie Raitt won best song at the Grammys last night... in a world of Hip Hop, modern R&B and twerking...

Excellent! She deserved the award! Some of the others and, I do say SOME don't have a clue what real music is. VERY SAD.
