For anyone who didn't get enough of Bonnie/John Prine at the Grammys here's a beautifully simple straightforward performance. I think it's from the late 80s in Holland.

    That's a great one.

This one is my favourite of all the versions I have heard:

Great song and performance, I like the Tedeschi Trucks version too.

Love both their voices. Sure glad Tedeschi Trucks are around to bring some organics back into the scene. Great version.

One of my favorites to play and sing.

I even have a John Prine flyswatter I bought at one of his concerts.

Yes, I noticed the same. They must have flipped the image when they were cutting/pasting the video/image.

I've been singing/playing this song a long, long time ( either solo, or swapping verses with female singer)- amazing how many folks do not know this as a John Prine song, but that's OK.

I tell them to get John Prine's first album and their minds will be blown- IMO, one of the best artist debut records ever! ( every song is a solid gem)

John Prine’s original version is in the running to be my favorite song. Bonnie Raitt is great, but she makes it too pretty; I like Prine’s rough edges in his voice.

I was raised in Birmingham, knew a lot of women from Montgomery, none of ‘em were angels.

One of the best songs ever. Used to hear it played every Sunday night by a local band, the male singer didn't change the gender of the lyrics around which emphasised the themes within the song. The girls in the crowd would be visibly affected by his performace.

Cool and I agree with your thoughts on the song. Good for that male singer, that's how John Prine wrote it and how John performs it himself. I think it's one the things that makes it such a beautiful and unique song. Here's John singin' it himself with wonderful Emmy Lou.

Ah yes I forgot to mention that when John wrote it, there weren't too many male singers singing from the woman's point of view, still aren't really, and that's what makes the song. Would be easy for a male singer covering it to switch the genders around, but that would cheapen the harsh reality of the subject's world
