I managed to read all the books in order, many, ahem, years ago, some before the movie came out. IMHO, all the books are better than all the movies, and the earlier the book, the better. What's strange about the movies is that they seem to stick to the book chronology, but as time goes on, the plots and details start to wildly diverge. The books are distinctly British in their casual upper-crust racism, with the only excuse being that everybody and everything was casually racist in the Fifties. But the movies are just as sexist. If you want to know what Ian Fleming thought James Bond looked like, look up "Hoagy Carmichael", the dude who wrote "Georgia on My Mind" and "Stardust". Yup, that guy.

And indeed he wasn’t. If we’re going to be an ally pedantic.

The stuntman walks in in the now iconic opening shot.

    I’ll see myself out.

Yep. Trubinski was a wild man, in the worst possible way.

Back to Bond (sorry): sean connery was hard to beat but i think Craig came closest. A big part of Bond should be a threatening physical presence and The Saint, for one, didn't fit that bill IMO.

Roger Moore was way too plasticky looking, Connery was tops.

The original Casino Royale with David Niven, Peter Sellers, and Woody Allen is awesome too, although it's a horse of a different color, and it features the Burt Bacharach tune The Look of Love performed by Dusty Springfield, and other music by Herb Alpert, as well as Deborah Kerr, Orson Welles, William Holden, Charles Boyer, John Huston, George Raft, Ursula Andress, Joanna Pettet, jean-Paul Belmondo, Jacqueline Bisset, and Peter O'Toole.
Of the Connery films, You Only Live Twice is my personal favorite.

Yes indeed. When he (Moore) escaped the predicament the villain left him in by jumping from croc to croc off an island (the movie title escapes me) i laughed out loud. He did not ooze physical invincability.

I’m old school. For me James Bond = Sean Connery. Didn’t any of the others to follow, except I do like Daniel Craig.

    I’m an OHMSS fan myself.

But You Only Live Twice, Thunderball, Goldfinger, Dr No and From Russia with Love are all great, watchable movies for their time.

Got all the books - the films start to diverge but you occasionally read a passage and remember a scene inspired by it. All the DVDs too, so don’t have to wait.

The early ones are a treat.

Ohmss is great actually. And Connery couldn’t have pulled it off then. The universe working in mysterious ways.

I'm not a fan of later Bond movies. I think Roger Moore turned Bond into a caricature of the spy genres with Moonraker being god awful. Although it was not a Moore movie, the one with Wayne Newton really sucked other than Carey Lowell.

Everyone has different tastes so some like Connery, others enjoy Moore, Dalton or Craig. Obviously the stunts, action sequences are more detailed in the later films.

I could still watch Dr. No, Russia with Love but I would have to be forced with the threat of a proctoscopy to watch the later films.

This made me think how Bond is a generational character like Who played Batman (Adam west, of course!) I also like the Connery movies but the first person that comes to mind when I hear bond is Pierce Brosnan because I was alive and introduced to bond in the mid 90’s (plus golden eye is one of the greatest video games of all time)

You never hear about Timothy Dalton though:(
