I think it's definitely the best of the Connery Bonds, which IMHO are overrated in relation to what followed. It's been so long since I read the books, I can't be an accurate judge of those. But I must admit that I'm a fan of Roger Moore Bonds such as "Live and Let Die" and "The Man With The Golden Gun," and I really like "Tomorrow Never Dies" with Pierce Brosnan.

I'm probably in minority all around when it comes to Bond.
For me the best Connery film is "Diamonds Are Forever". Moore, probably "For Your Eyes Only".
I actually think I like Dalton best. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like if he'd stuck around for "GoldenEye".
I also liked Lazenby, and "OHMSS".
Brosnan I really only like "GoldenEye".
I like Craig as well, but I feel like his movies are still too new to judge... if that makes sense.
I met Pierce once, on a film set. Ace of a guy from the brief bit of interaction I had with him.
I think I could really only rank the actors if we were allowed to split Moore into early and late periods.

I saw most of the older Bond movies with never having read the books. Are they good?

I liked reading the early Stephen King stuff and I remember being mildly disappointed in what Hollywood would come up with (at least back in the 70s and 80s).

I might have to grab a few early Bond novels if they are better than the movies!

Those Connery ones are the only ones I'd tune in to watch.
I like the Roger Moore one with cousin Bubba's speed boat chase too.

My fav Connery film is You Only Live Twice. Moore film favorite would be Octokitty or Spy Who Loved Me.

I read "Diamonds are Forever". Nothing at all to do with the film (which is oft the norm). It was fine enough, although I distinctly remember line like "Bond reached the door and it was opened by a smart Jewish girl."

Thanks for the heads up. I've got the popcorn maker popping. Ursula Andrews as Honey Ryder in Dr. No, maybe the original blonde bombshell poster girl.

Yes. From Russia With Love and Casino Royale were my favorites. A slightly darker, more serious Bond. I think the Daniel Craig Bond was supposed to be closer to Flemings original Bond in the books.

It is my opinion that the literary Bond is a parody. He's a lousy agent in the books who only completes his missions due to completely unforeseen events. He's reckless. The only reason he gets chosen for the Casino Royale gig is that none of the other agents is reckless enough to gamble. He is physically quite tough, though.

    I did enjoy the books.

We may have to explain that....even to some of the "mature" guys. When the host on TCM introduced the films, he was careful to say Connery was the first to portray Bond ON THE BIG SCREEN.
