I watched the Grateful Dead 60th shows on Nugs over the weekend. Overall a fun watch. Sturgill Simpson ruled the weekend IMO with Billy Strings a close second.
But this is about Bobby….Boy this may be the end of the road. He didn’t even seem to be playing and his guitar was so far down in the mix you simply couldn’t hear it. Often he was shrugging his shoulders clearly not aware of where in the song he was. Had a 1000 yard stare. He looked 90yo and lost much of the time. His voice is shot and of course he messed up more than a few lyrics. And that’s what happens with age, some sooner some later.
Despite Bobby’s frailty it was amazing how the band carried him and looked out for him and let him lead the band. He’d drop his pick and Mayer was right there to get it for him. He’d get lost and they’d steer him back. They allowed him to play on his own terms at his own tempo. Totally selfless of the band. At times I was "get him off the stage, it's elder abuse" but then realized something greater was happening.
The crowd was fully into it supporting him as well. It was so amazing it transcended the music and made it into something greater.
Cool thing was he was out there 3 hours for 3 nights in a row! He pulled it off!
Sometimes we just want to see virtuoso performances and be blown away but music doesn’t have to be perfect or difficult to move you. Last night’s show was the most heart felt I’ve ever witnessed.
What ever happens next with Bobby and the boys, and he has bounced back before, this may be a peak performance….
Glad I was able to watch it.
