I watched the Grateful Dead 60th shows on Nugs over the weekend. Overall a fun watch. Sturgill Simpson ruled the weekend IMO with Billy Strings a close second.

But this is about Bobby….Boy this may be the end of the road. He didn’t even seem to be playing and his guitar was so far down in the mix you simply couldn’t hear it. Often he was shrugging his shoulders clearly not aware of where in the song he was. Had a 1000 yard stare. He looked 90yo and lost much of the time. His voice is shot and of course he messed up more than a few lyrics. And that’s what happens with age, some sooner some later.

Despite Bobby’s frailty it was amazing how the band carried him and looked out for him and let him lead the band. He’d drop his pick and Mayer was right there to get it for him. He’d get lost and they’d steer him back. They allowed him to play on his own terms at his own tempo. Totally selfless of the band. At times I was "get him off the stage, it's elder abuse" but then realized something greater was happening.

The crowd was fully into it supporting him as well. It was so amazing it transcended the music and made it into something greater.

Cool thing was he was out there 3 hours for 3 nights in a row! He pulled it off!

Sometimes we just want to see virtuoso performances and be blown away but music doesn’t have to be perfect or difficult to move you. Last night’s show was the most heart felt I’ve ever witnessed.

What ever happens next with Bobby and the boys, and he has bounced back before, this may be a peak performance….

Glad I was able to watch it.

I read a bit of an interview with Bob Weir recently where he said that he was comfortable with the thought of dying.

I'm probably not saying that right, but that was the jist of it.

Times have changed. We used to go to the restroom when a Bobby song would come on, giving us enough time to get back for the next Jerry song. Now I just want the guy to keep playing forever.

That's utterly ridiculous! So you spent half the show in the bathroom.....!

So you missed EVERY The Other One, Mama Tried, Mexicali, Sugar Mag, One More Sat Night, Playing in The Band etc.....?

GREAT MOVE knuckle head!

Estimated Prophet, The Music Never Stopped, Samson & Delilah?- no way!
Bobby was great!

Yep!

I recall Ventura 1983 and noticing Bob was the engine that was driving the band!

Dude is THE most underrated guitarist! NO rhythm player like him!

Funny thing a lot of leads were Bob too! Iconic China Cat>Rider riffs were Bob!

I didn’t watch any of it but can’t way to see some clips (I am particularly interested in in seeing Sturgill in that context).

Bobby is one of the most underrated guitar players in the history of rock music. But that aside, he has been going for a long time and going hard. I can’t think of any musician that has carried on touring at such a pace for so long. Maybe they’re out there. But I can’t think of one. What an amazing life he and other members of the Grateful Dead have had. It cant go on forever I suppose.

Here's an audience vid of SS playing Morning Dew. I'm sold on Nugs now! it'd been a few years since I watched anything on it and they have really upped their game. The shows will probably eventually make there way to the basic subscription level. Super professional polsich presentation. Must have been at least 12 camera angles and they focussed on the singer and lead musician when appropriate!

That is concerning to hear, I hope his condition is only temporary. I've seen several fairly recent performances in differing configurations on youtube in which this was not evident, other than his voice has gradually changed a bit.
